Is there a guide to adding additional DAEs to an existing VNX5300?

Hello,

We currently own a VNX5300 with two DAEs.  We've purchased a third DAE to add.

However, we only recieved the DAE, the disks, SAS cables, and power cables. (No instructions, unlike the handy blue binder and CDs with got with the initial VNX.)

So could anyone point me to a guide to follow for up grades?

I'm guessing that I just need to put the VNX in some form of maintenance mode, and then daisy chain the new DAE in with the SAS cables? (That is to say, run cables from our  DPE to the first expansion DAE,  run cables form our first expansion DAE to our second expansion DAE, and then run cables from our second expansion DAE to the DPEs?)

Have you added the new DAE  yet? Did it require  Storage Processor reboot ? I am in the same exact boat. Looking to add a new DAE to already existing VNX5300 setup. I can't stop I/O to the SAN as document for SP reboot since this is the only SAN we have in production.

I have the guide: Document ID - 1340008380895. I did read it, and according to it SPs require a reboot. So I was asking if that was the case when you added your DAE into the setup? Did USM ask/rebooted the SPs ?

I have number of VMs that i can not afford downtime for (at least not with out scheduling something 3-4 weeks ahead of time) ;(.

You mean this link? http://mydocs.emc.com/VNX/DownloadResultServlet?resultId=1340008380895

So the section I think you are referring to is

>>

If you are told to use the Back-end Bus Speed Reset Wizard in Unisphere:

a. Before continuing, stop all I/O to the storage system because the wizard reboots both

SPs.

b. In Unisphere, select System > Hardware, and under the System Management task list,

select Back-end Bus Speed Reset Wizard.

c. Follow the instructions to change the back-end bus speed.

>>

This doesnt really apply to VNX's as all the backend bus always work at 6gb

Even on a CX4 this would be unusual

You need to download USM to help you to do it

it should not require SPs to be rebooted. It does require SPs to be rebooted if you are changing back-end bus speed, but as far as i know VNX support only 6G SAS DAEs ..so i don't see why one would need to change it and to what value ?

On older CX models you could chagne bus speed from 4G to 2G if you wanted to install older models of DAEs.

The link listed above:   https://mydocs.emc.com/VNX/requestMyDoc.jsp

Helps you create a guide.

Reporting back.

I pulled the plug, meaning attached the new DAE and followed USM's guide. DAE connected fine, no reboots and it worked right away.

Thanks guys and girls.
