{MOVED}Windows Update won't update

When I open Windows Update, the window comes up with a red shield with a white X on it. When I click Check for Updates, a windows pops up that says, 'Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.' If I restart my computer, that doesn't help. Any suggestions?

I had purchased a 3 incident software fix subscription from Dell Software Solutions, but of course that expired about a week and a half ago.

Did Malwarebytes find anything?

It appears that the system is/was infected with a backdoor trojan. This allows hackers to remotely control the computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

Elm Cutting, I would advise you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the infection has been identified and can be killed, because of its backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

You can try additional cleaning of this machine but there is no guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

* Please be aware that there is a possibility that you'll lose your internet connections. That will require a repair install.

* There's also a possibility that during the cleaning procedure the computer will become unusable which will result in a repair install or complete format and install.

* Make sure you have good backups of all of the important items on the system before attempting additional cleaning.

If you decide to have it cleaned further at SpywareHammer, it is very important that, because of the nature of this infection, you have it done as soon as possible. If you register there let them know that you were sent from Dell Community.

Good luck!

Thank you for the feedback. I'm glad you finally decided to do that reinstall of the operating system.

They recommended iolo System Mechanic, which I bought. But it seems that each time I run it, it causes problems, so I'm trying to get a refund
I would pursue that refund if I were you. I do not recommend System Mechanic.

It would also be a good idea to uninstall whatever was installed by Hands Free Network and Citrix GoToAssist.  If you need to use Dell Tech Support again, they can reinstall it easily.

Elm Cutting, if you feel that my suggestion to reinstall the OS solved the problem, please check the Yes button to let us know that it answered your question.

Elm Cutting,

Usinf a single virus program should be the way to do things. more that one virus program and firewall conflicts with the other causing problems.

I also use the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Update date is and do a weekly scan.

Run CCleaner and then run the defragmenter monthly.

Make sure to get the Windows Updates for Windows ONLY after the second Tuesday of each month.

Elm Cutting,

Sorry was replay to another thread when I was called away.

Try reading...

Windows Updates fail to install

There is a fix there for each operating system.

RockStar,

Thank you for your response(s). The 'Windows Update fail to install' link for Vista didn't help. It took me to a FixIt program that didn't find any problems and therefore didn't apply any fixes. Probably that was because Update is installed, it just won't run9--not running is the problem, not not being installed.

Anyway,

Elm Cutting,

Do you have the operating system disk?

If yes, insert the disk and stop it from running.

Start, all programs, accessories, right click on command prompt, left click run as administrator. Type

sfc /scannow          (space between the c and /)

Hit enter this will check and replace any missing and/or corrupt Windows files.

Take out the disk when it's doner, and restart the computer.

Have you scanned for malware? Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware update it and do a qucik scan. post the log if it finds anything.

RockStar,

I do have the Operating System disk. I inserted it, ran sfc /scannow with the result 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.'

I did a QuickScan with Malwarebytes and this was in the log: 'Files Detected: 1

C:\Windows\Installer\{5bffece9-5e1c-a84f-b1d0-590e09f29a6e}\U\800000cb.@ (Rootkit.0Access) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.'

I inserted the Operating System disk again, ran sfc /scannow with the improved result of: 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.'

Rebooted the computer but Windows Update still won't run. The same message comes up, 'Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.'

There was a little more to the sfc /scannow end message and more yet in the Malwarebytes log (and another log also--a protection-log-2010-07-10 in addition to the mbam-log-201-007-10 (22-32-15)), but I don't think there's any useful information in them.

So, bad news.

Elm Cutting,

Did Malwarebytes find anything? Sounds like there is some type of infection.

Please follow the directions at http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=12262.0 to register and post the requested logs at spywarehammer.com ; there are expert helpers there who can "walk you through" procedures to analyze your system, and clean-up the infection. All help provided there is FREE. If you decide to go for help there, please wait for a response, and do NOT attempt to run any other scans/removers on your own --- do exactly what they instruct you to do, no more, no less.

Good luck!

Bugbatter (and RockSt[star]r-Rick),

Bugbatter, your response froze me up for a couple of days.

Once I unfroze, wanting a second opinion, I contacted Dell Solution Station. I am unfamiliar with these boards and don't seem to have that much time to get familiar with them and perhaps therefore didn't go the SpywareHammer route. By the time I contacted the Dell Solution Station tech, I couldn't even run their GoToAssist (is that its name?) (to allow them remote access to my computer). They said I had a virus, probably that backdoor trojan you mentioned. That 'red shield with a white X on it' that I noted came up when I tried to run Windows Update would seem to indicate that someone was remotely taking over administrative control of some of the functions of my computer.

Anyway, I reinstalled the OS wiping everything clean, yes?, and, to make a short story of it, various programs, changed a bunch of passwords. GoToAssist[ant?] could run too by that time and they ran a bunch of programs from the Hands Free Network which still pop up periodically and (try to?) run and which therefore when I find the time I'm going to ask them to uninstall.

They recommended iolo System Mechanic, which I bought. But it seems that each time I run it, it causes problems, so I'm trying to get a refund. I saw on some other board somewhere that System Mechanic was 'kind of aggressive.'

I did have backups, both on My Book and Dell DataSafe.

I apologize for not responding sooner.

Bugbatter,

'if you feel that my suggestion to reinstall the OS solved the problem, please check the Yes button'

Did that. Thanks.

'I would pursue that refund if I were you.'

I'll do that.

Elm Cutting,

Glad you got it working! :emotion-21: Thnaks for posting back. I usually recommend staying away from  registry programs and these programs that claim to update drivers. Have seen more systems get incorrect drivers and malfunction.

Yes, get that refund.

Take care,

Rick
