Dell Unity Move Filesystem between pools

We have a dell Unity with two standard pools.
We would like to move a filesystem from  Pool B to Pool A

It appears replication is the way this is done.  I am looking for step by step instructions on it.

Hi,

Thanks for your question. These documents might help. https://dell.to/3LSFtfl and https://dell.to/3JJUvkN and https://dell.to/42FA6q0

Let us know if you have any additional questions.

Good Morning

The first article focused on VMFS Datastores and block movement between pools.  It did not address the move of a filesystem

The second article talked about replication, but did not address replicating data between pools on a single Dell Unity

The third Article has permissions on it that do not allow me to see it.

I am looking for Step-By-Step instruction to move a filesystem (NAS) from one pool to another in a single Dell Unity.

Good Afternoon

So, we have two pools, which each have a filesystem

Pool1 --> datstore1

Pool2 --> Datastore2

Both pools are managed by the NAS server "NAS1"

We want to Move datastore2 filesystem to Pool1

Using the supplied steps on Page 48, the system wants to replicate Datastore2 to Pool1 (we want) AND datastore1 to Pool2 (we do not want).  There is no space in Pool2 for datastore1.
The system will not let me deselect Datastore1 from the "Create a Session" screen

How do I only do the one filesystem:?

No
The huge issue is, there is room in Pool1 for datastore2
There is no room in Pool2 for Datastore1 - and it wants to create the replication destination as part of the setup.

Our goal was to move Datastore2 to Pool1 presently, delete pool2, and add the disks that were pool2 to pool1.  Replication seemed to be the only option

Try https://dell.to/3zQ9kOq

and

https://dell.to/3zUcYa0;Unity Move feature:
Unity Move feature is an online activity which is a native support for moving LUNs and VMFS Datastores online between pools or within the same pool. However it is not applicable to Vvols, as it cannot be migrated on Unity.
This ability allows for manual control over load balancing and rebalancing of data between pools. Local LUN Move leverages Transparent Data Transfer (TDX) technology, a multi -threaded, transparent data copy engine. TDX is designed to help ensure a low impact on host access during a move session.

The Migrated LUN will inherit its existing properties, i.e[ Name, Description, Size] and can not be changed. The only possible changes is to change the LUN from Thick to Thin or Vice versa , set Data reduction and advance deduplication option.

To Migrate a Datastore:
Goto : Unity Unisphere > Storage  > VMware > Select the Data store > On top left click  More Actions  > Move .
Once done, a pop up will occur.
Set the priority of migration > Choose to which pool you want to migrate > Check or Uncheck the Thin provision option> Click Ok once done.

You can monitor the Move operation progress from the properties of the data store.

Note:
If the Datastore has snapshots, after the move session is complete, the snapshots on the Datastore, including those in use by applications, will no longer be valid and will be deleted.
It will prompt with the below message:

" The Datastore has one or more snapshots. After the move session is complete, the snapshots on the Datastore, including those in use by applications, will no longer be valid and will be deleted.
Note: The performance of some applications using snapshots may be adversely impacted if the snapshots are deleted."
Do you want to move the Datastore?"

To Migrate a LUN:
Goto : Unity Unisphere > Storage  > Block > Select the LUN > On top left click  More Actions  > Move.
Once done, a pop up will occur, Set the priority of migration > Choose to which pool you want to migrate > Check or Uncheck if Thin provision needed > Click Ok once done.

You can monitor the Move operation progress from the properties of the LUN.

Note:
Ensure enough space in the pool before migration.
Ensure no replication session exist on the LUN before migration. All existing snaps will be lost after Move operation.

Will it let you turn off replication on datastore1 before trying to configure the replication session?

Good Morning

We are trying to move a NAS filesystem
the documentation you supplied states "This feature is available for VMFS Datastores and Block LUNs, including LUNs within a Consistency Group."  It does not work for filesystems, trust me, we tried that out of the gate.

Ok, yeah I don’t think it is possible then.

Hello Bronze,

Moving a filesystem from one pool to another in Dell Unity can be done using the replication feature. Below are the general steps to accomplish this:

  1. Create a replication session from Pool B to Pool A. To do this, log in to the Unity Management Interface (UMI) and navigate to the Replication section. Then, click on the 'Create Session' button and select Pool B as the source pool and Pool A as the target pool.

  2. Once the replication session has been created, you can start replicating the filesystem from Pool B to Pool A. To do this, select the replication session in the Replication section and click on the 'Start' button.

  3. Wait for the replication to complete. You can monitor the progress of the replication in the Replication section. Once the replication has completed, the filesystem will be available in Pool A.

  4. Stop the replication session. Once the filesystem has been replicated to Pool A, you can stop the replication session to prevent any further replication. To do this, select the replication session in the Replication section and click on the 'Stop' button.

  5. Remove the replication session. Once the replication session has been stopped, you can remove it from the Replication section.

It is important to note that the above steps are general and the actual steps may differ depending on the version of Unity you are using. Additionally, it is recommended to consult the Dell Unity documentation or reach out to their technical support for detailed instructions on performing this operation.

I hope this helps!

[Best Regards]

Olivia Devid
