How to turn the number lock option on and off on the Dell km713 keyboard part of the km714 bundle

Dell keyboards have this nasty habit of not having a designated key for number lock like the keyboards that weighed 5 lbs had back in the good ole days. When using the Dell km713 keyboard, which is the keyboard in the km714 keyboard and mouse combo, you will find that there is not a designated key for number lock. I have found that there is more than one way to enable or disable the number lock feature on the km713 keyboard or any keyboard with or without a number lock key. This can depend on the manufacturer of your computer e.g. Dell, Apple, Toshiba, Sony; this can also depend on the type of operating system your computer is using e.g. Windows, Linux, Macintosh/Apple; and also may be specific to the version of the operating system that your computer is using e.g. Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, Macintosh OS X 10, 10.7, Leopard 10.5, Linux Mint, Ubuntu.

The solution in this paragraph pertains to the second conundrum I have experienced with the km713 keyboard. If you are using a Dell Inspiron 23 model number 5348 computer running Windows 8.1 then you can lock or unlock the numeric key pad doing this: control panel>ease of access>change how your keyboard works>then look for, control the mouse with the keyboard, then just under the description (control ... the keyboard) click the box, and there should only be one box under (control ... the keyboard), with your mouse. Then click apply and your Dell km713 keyboard number section will no longer function as a numeric keypad. The number keys 8,6,2,4 on the numeric keyboard will then move the mouse up, right, down, and left respectively. Note, the reason that I'm adding the next paragraph is to be as accurate as possible to help prevent you from having to research this number lock problem any further.

I purchased the km714 bundle and have the corresponding wm514 mouse that uses the dongle that came with my km632 keyboard that came with the purchase of my Dell Inspiron 23 model 5348. The reason for that is the dongle that came with my km714 bundle could access my km713 keyboard, but not my wm514 mouse. I had to use the km632 dongle so my computer could access both my wm514 mouse and km713 keyboard. (for what reason I still don't know because this is a low priority issue in my life, probably just a bad dongle, but who knows) This may be the reason or one of the reasons that the number lock keys move the mouse pointer so slowly when the control the mouse with your keyboard option is selected on my computer. So, if the above information doesn't help you with enabling or disabling the number lock feature on your Dell km713 keyboard: it may be because of the different dongle that my km714 bundle is using to access my Dell Inspiron 23 model 5348 computer running Windows 8.1.

I will continue to update this post as I learn knew information regarding the Dell keyboard number lock conundrum. I don't expect to be adding to this post anytime soon. I hope that this post has resolved any issue you may have had regarding your Dell km713 keyboard or understanding how to utilize the ease of access options in Windows 8.1.

Hello DELLP31F,

I'm using a KM714 bundle too with a DELL Lattitue E5550. Problem i have is that i cannot use the ALT fn for inserting special characters such as Ø ½ µ, do you know or have you found a shortcut to get this functionality?

Thanks
