VRTX CMC can not reset, access, or other wise interface with.

Hello,

future apologies for double posting.

My issue is-- I tried to setup the CMC on a VLAN to segment my home network. Guest from MY network, if that makes sense.

I have a cisco 2960-S switch which I have configured reset and reconfigured 50 times.
I have followed numerous guides-- eventually I gave up on this path and settled on resetting through the serial port.

I put a jumper on the J_PWORD and used the baudrate/serial settings as per the documentation. I've tried putty, minicom, SecureCRT, and MobaXterm no success with any.

I have replaced the CMC card, and the wonky settings carried over.
I have power cycled with & without the cmos battery inside--- I actually started documenting all the troubleshooting I've done here:

Contacted dell support and they told me to get a new card; no success.

I don't know what else to do!

No amber lights, solid greens solid blues.

My current thinking is

A. Motherboard is damaged?

B. Serial port is broken on motherboard?
C. I'm cursed??

Some more information, it's a homelab situation.

Right now it's on a private network, before I was troubleshooting when it was directly connected to my ISP's provided router. Its connected through a OPNsense router gateway 10.0.0.1, ip range 10.0.0.2 - 245, sub 255.255.255.0.
ISP ROUTER > OPNSENSE > SWITCH > DESKTOP & SERVERS ETC.

Right now I have it set to a static 10.0.0.2 and still can't ping it or anything connected directly form the cmc port or otherwise.

Hello it looks like your CMC is not working properly. Could you raise an official ticket to have it looked further?

Respectfully,

@DELL-Young E

"Hello it looks like your CMC is not working properly."
Yeah... I figured that one out... 😅

Believe you me I have tried, I had two different cases open and I still have gotten nowhere.

Which is fine the technician did an awesome job, cool dude for sure.
Last thing the technician told me to do was to replace the CMC card.
I did that and still am facing the same issue.
I am now looking for outside information.

It's like the settings from the old card carried over to the new card.

Does the motherboard have it's own bios/cmc settings?

I just want to reset the whole thing from and start from scratch at this point! 😭😭😭

Hello,

See if you have your serial connection configured::

How to connect to the Dell Chassis Management Controller (CMC) using a serial connection

Page 6:

racresetcfg -- restore the CMC configuration to factory defaults

I may recommend contact support again. They can do a remote session with you that the forum is not designed to do.

I'm starting to think it's a hardware failure( regardless of no indication)

Something with the motherboard maybe?

If I replace the motherboard... surely that's got to clear out some settings no?

A possibility the CMC you got was bad; Did you get another to try?

Did you get to contact the engineer(s) again, you worked with before?

Do you notice any damage, bad components like capacitor, pin or socket damage anywhere on the motherboard?

You could try a different motherboard. There is a white sticker with a DP/N number on it. That would be your motherboard part number.

@Dell -Charles R

I wonder if I should have named my post differently.
My CMC is stuck on Acquring IP after putting it on a VLAN.

'A possibility the CMC you got was bad; Did you get another to try?'

You mean, like getting a third?

If so no. The second card I got was latest firmware; but same as the original card solid blue, solid green. I didn't think to get a third.

I'm going to try to fluke the CMC eth. port to see if I can get any kind of reading out of it.

The serial port is really loose. The solder contacts may have broken I'm going to inspect it further today removing all the components down to the motherboard.

It was working perfectly fine until I put the card on a VLAN.
Where are the... settings/bios stored? Motherboard no?
Why would clearing the cmos & removing all power & ethernet & power cycling not reset this?
Am going to google after this post, is there a reset pin like this image shows?

link
"Wait for the CMC to finish rebooting. In the web interface, in the system tree, go to Chassis Overview and click Power Control, select the Reset CMC (warm boot), and click Apply."

Is it possible to warm reset, without ability to access CMC without serial or webgui?

Another idea came to mind. If I take this card out and put this in a machine in production... copy over production settings.

Take it back and try resetting it at home.

No way my boss lets me do this, but I'm still going to ask

Have you tried serial connect to the CMC and run :

racadm racresetcfg page 76

Connect to the Dell Chassis Management Controller (CMC) using a serial connection

This video will demonstrate collecting procedure of the Dell Chassis Management Controller (CMC) using a serial connection.

I don't think there is a way to warm reset without connecting to the CMC, webgui or serial.

You may not have this since the CMC have been reset but I'll ask;

Did you have a Chassis configuration saved you could restore?

Saving or Restoring Chassis Configuration

Obtain Recovery Information from DB-9 Serial Port

You seem thorough with your troubleshooting and have probably done all the things I mentioned. I don't know how assigning a VLAN would make it inaccessible. Have you removed all the switches from the chassis?
