PowerEdge R820 Stuck on iDRAC 2.41.40.40
I have a R820, it's out of warranty.
The Server and iDRAC is working fine, but the iDRAC Firmware is stuck on 2.41.40.40. I can't upgrade or downgrade the iDRAC firmware.
I can downgrade the BIOS, but thus far that hasn't helped me in getting the iDRAC firmware updated. I'm currently running an older BIOS version trying to install older iDRAC firmware versions.
I get errors when trying to update/downgrade the firmware from:
- Windows OS installed on R820
- iDRAC running on the R820
I tried booting to the lifecycle controller to update to the latest version of the iDRAC firmware, but that didn't work either.
Has anyone had this issue before?

Hello thanks for choosing Dell.
Do you have a screenshot of the error messages you can show?
I would also suggest we can try below:

Here's the error I get when I try update the firmware with the iDRAC with Lifecycle Controller EXE:
Here's the error from Lifecycle log from above event:
I tried to update to 2.50.50.50 directly from the LifeCycle Controller and a USB drive...
No error displayed, but when I check the LifeCycle log:
The TPM is disabled.
As for the guide you recommend, I don't think it applies to me, as there seems to be no way to tell the system to read the SD card.
Recovering the iDRAC
Solution
(I got a 8GB SD card formated a 4GB parition as FAT)
(dropped image on SD card)
(Pushed it in, rebooted server)
(Boot loader booted the server as per normal, did not care that I put a SD card in with a firmimg.d7 on it)

Hello,
Try a flea power drain and attempt the update in the DRAC:
drain flea power (shut down, disconnect power cables and Network cables, hold in power button 20 seconds with cords removed). After flea power drain, system has to set for 3 minutes for DRAC to reset without any power plugged in, then plug in NIC and power but wait 2 minutes before power on to give DRAC time to initialize.
Log into the DRAC and supply the .d7 file for 2.50.50.50 on the update page in the DRAC.
Download a fresh file in case something was wrong with the previous download:
File Format: An application
File Name: iDRAC8_2.50.50.50_A00.exe
File Size: 94.36 MB
Format Description: Application

Execute file that downloads and supply the .d7 file in the iDRAC Update

Charles R:
I've followed your steps, and I'm still stuck on 2.41.40.40
Flea power drain r820, try to flash firmware, it doesn't work.

One of your images gave us a clue: Recovery Mode
LCC in recovery mode:
Make sure Collect System Information On Restart (CSIOR) is enabled and choose these options:
-boot to F2 -> System Setup -> iDRAC Settings -> Lifecycle Controller to check status
-Choose: Lifecycle Controller set to Enabled
-Collect System Inventory on Restart set to Enabled.
-Cancel Lifecycle Controller Actions set to Yes.

The Lifecycle Controller was already set to Enabled
Collect System Inventory on Restart was already set to Enabled
Cancel Lifecycle Controller Actions was set to No. I have set it to Yes
Now should I try something else?

Cancel Lifecycle Controller Actions keeps going back to No, I can't get it to stick at yes.

Cancel Lifecycle Controller Action going back to No is fine. It's a one time flag to cancel any ongoing operations in the LCC.
I see this on the image:
iDRAC Settings Version - 1.65.65.04
iDARC Firmware Version - 2.41.40 (Build 7)
Try the .d7 file from this link for the iDRAC Firmware version 1.66.65.
File Format: An application
File Name: iDRAC7__1.66.65__A00.exe

Can you verify that you executed the file that was downloaded and supplied the .d7 file in the iDRAC on the update page?

I've tried in the iDRAC using the .d7 from the compressed file you provided, no go.
I've tried n the Lifecycle controller, with the Win64 Executable, no go.

Hi, you’ve already tried the recommended steps such as performing a flea power drain, checking the Lifecycle Controller settings, and attempting the update with a .d7 file. You can try to reset iDRAC like in here How to Reset the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) | Dell US However, I don't have additional troubleshooting steps. I wonder if this could be an OEM device.

It's a regular everyday Official PowerEdge R820.
Today I just unplugged the power and ethernet. Pushed in power button for over 20 seconds, then waited another 3 minutes. Plugged power and network cables back in and did not push power button.
After a few minutes, iDRAC came back up, logged in, uploaded the firmimg.d7 from 1.66.65.
The iDRAC rebooted, and I couldn't get it from it's IP address anymore, so I booted the server.
And still on 2.41.40.40.

Try putting the firmimg.d7 from 1.66.65 on the SD card. Check if it will boot to it.
