MPUIQ-SRL cables for Dell KVMs

Apologies if this isn't in the right subforum:

I have a couple of Dell KVMs (180AS and 2160AS) and got ahold of a few serial interface cables for them. For whatever reason I cannot get the -SRL cables to go "Active" regardless of what type of serial interface they're connected to. Tried with a PC running TeraTerm, a ham radio data link peripheral, etc. The KVMs themselves work as I can see other MPUIQ devices when they're connected.

What are these supposed to work with, and what sort of initialization sequence is required to get them to show an active link? The included documentation is a little sparse on details.

Thanks!

...Fred...

Hi Fred,

I assume that you're referring to the KVM serial ports connections. I'm unsure what do you mean by Active link, assuming you're trying to console into the KVM? The console RS232 port cannot be used for serial console. It is only for firmware updates only, which only specific to Dell KVM application. (From the user guide: This utility automatically configures the port communications settings to allow direct downloading from the connected server.)

Joey,

I'm referring to the SIP modules which allow VT100 connections to serial devices (e.g., a headless Unix or Linux server).

Hi,

I don't have a good reference on which SIP cables would work. I came across an old post thread: https://dell.to/4b8NMxX that stated on Avocent brand cables. The user guide https://dell.to/47QdIeJ also did mentioned Avocent™ AVRIQ intelligent cables for serial cabling options, page 8.

I think I found an answer (after digging around a bit).

There's an Avocent compatibility matrix which shows the -SRL units are not compatible with the 180AS, 2160AS and similar models. 2161DS/AD, 1082AD and others which have an OBWS are listed as compatible. Makes sense, as the server is used to emulate a VT100.

Thanks for the assistance!
