Windows Lock Screen Enters Standby After 1 Minute Due to Dell Optimizer Proximity Sensor

Precision 3660 Tower

Precision 3660 Tower

Hello,
Dell Optimizer VS 3.2.212.0 came installed on my new Dell.  Upon starting up the Lock Screen goes into standby mode within less than 1 minute.

The fix from Dell is to select the Proximity Sensor within Dell Optimizer App-which DOES NOT exist.

Can I uninstall Dell Optimizer to eliminate this issue?  If YES - Do I need to uninstall another other associated Dell Support apps like

Support Assist?

AND/OR

Dell Peripheral Manager?

AND/OR

Dell Command, etc.?

Please read all the above to advise on all questions.

Thank you.

Hello and thank you for your extensive reply.  I use Windows 10 Pro. Vs 10.0.19044 Build 19044

SupportAssist is up to date.Version: 3.13.2.14 BIOs v1.7.1  Everything in Dell Command is up to dateBeing a desktop I don't have Laptop features, no camera, either.

After finally solving the Sleep/Power button issue I can live with the 30 second window when turning on for now.

Hi DB3103:

Before anyone attempts to answer all those questions, does your Dell Optimizer have a Proximity Sensor panel as shown in Figure 2 in the 20-Dec-2022 support article Windows Locks / Enters Standby After 1 Minute Due to Dell Optimizer Proximity Sensor.

If your Dell Optimizer v3.2.212.0 (rel. 19-Dec-2022) interface looks different, does it have a panel named Presence Detection like the one shown in Figure 3 (under the User Interface section) of the 10-Jan-2023 support article Dell Optimizer : Overview and Common Questions?

Dell Optimizer isn't supported on my Insipron 5584 but I assume Proximity Sensor and Presence Detector perform similar functions in different versions of Dell Optimizer - see the section titled "Presence Detection" in the Dell Optimizer Version 3.2 User's Guide.  Release notes with a list of fixes and feature enhancements for Dell Optimizer v3.2 are available <here>.

I appreciate your response, thank you.  I don't have a camera, and this feature only offers "Go Back".  This vs seems to be the latest.

Newest issue, despite Windows settings to never hibernate - this does and I have to lightly depress the Off/On button - never had this issue with my last Precision.

Hi DB3103:

As I stated before I don't have Dell Optimizer installed on my Inspiron laptop, but I'll throw out a few ideas that might point you in the right direction while you're waiting for someone with a Dell workstation to reply.

It would be helpful if you could provide more information about your Precision 3660 Tower workstation. For example, do you have a Win 10 or Win 11 OS, and what is the edition (e.g., Pro, Enterprise, etc.), version (e.g., 22H1, 22H2, etc.) and OS build number shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications?

Did your computer ship with SupportAssist for Home PCs (currently v3.13.0.326, which I use) or SupportAssist for Business (currently  v3.3.1.93), and what is your current version? Did your workstation ship with Dell Update v4.x, and are you using the Dell Command | Update Windows Universal Application v4.8.0 (Dell-Command-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_6GMR6_WIN_4.8.0_A00.EXE, rel. 31-Jan-2023) currently recommended <here> on the Precision 3660 Tower support page?

Have you installed the latest Dell Precision 3660 System BIOS v1.7.1 (rel. 11-Nov-2022) recommended on your support page? If you aren't sure enter msinfo32 in a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) to open your System Information panel and look for the field named "BIOS Version/Date".

Does the on/off power button of your Precision 3660 also function as a biometric fingerprint reader? If you aren't sure the section for the Dell ControlVault3 Driver and Firmware 5.9.12.21 (rel. 09-May-2022) on the support page <here> for the Precision 3660 Tower include links to support articles that might provide some useful information.

If you enter powercfg /a in an elevated command prompt what sleep states are supported on your system?

Note that the image above shows the BIOS for my Inspiron 5584 home PC does not support Modern Standby (S0 Low Power Idle).  I have had several problems with hibernation and sleep mode on this computer - for example, my computer will wake from sleep when it tries to hibernate if I use the default advanced settings for my Dell power plan [see my 19-Jan-2020 post in my topic Inspiron 15 5584 Wakes After 180 Min of Sleep (ACPI Wake Alarm)], and will not wake from sleep mode if I permit it to enter sleep mode by itself (i.e., if I don't enter sleep mode manually at Start | Power | Sleep), forcing me to perform a hard shutdown by holding down the power button for ~ 10 seconds. I suspect Dell installed an outdated motherboard in my laptop that is not compatible with the power saver features of my NVMe SSD drive and/or other modern hardware components.

Please see RichieBD's 15-Jul-2022 Precision 3660 WOL Does Not Work in the Dell Precision Fixed Workstations forum just in case you are having a similar problem with Wake-on-LAN (WOL), hibernation, and/or Modern Standby (S0) sleep state that are discussed in that topic.

...I don't have a camera, and this feature only offers "Go Back".

Does your Precision 3660 Tower come with an internal motion sensor? According to the "Presence Detection" section of the Dell Optimizer Version 3.2 User's Guide "Presence Detection is an integrated feature in selected Dell laptops and mobile workstations. The internal sensor detects your presence when you are in front of your system and within the field-of-view (FOV) of the sensor...However, if you have connected an external sensor in your system, the internal sensor is disabled." That would suggest that a camera is not required if your Precision 3660 came with an internal motion sensor.

If your Precision 3660 does not have an internal motion sensor then that might explain the "Go Back" message you see when you try to configure the Presence Detection feature of Dell Optimizer v3.2.212 (a screen shot of this message might be helpful) and that Dell support is incorrect that Presence Detection (a.k.a. Proximity Sensor) is responsible for your lock screen entering standby so quickly.
