Why are do all hardware tests show "Error"?

I am trying to find out why my Dell XPS 13 7390 suddenly shuts down on it's own.  Suspecting a problem with the battery I opened up Dell SupportAssist app and then to Support>Test my hardware>I want to troubleshoot my PC>I want to check a specific piece of hardware.  When I try to test Battery or any other piece of hardware I get an "Error" as the result.  Can anyone please tell me why this is, and how I can test my battery?

Hi somck53:

See Dell employee DELL-Chris M's 10-Jun-2024 SupportAssist, "Hardware scan fails", "We ran into a problem" about some of the known bugs with the current SupportAssist v4.0.3.

Try running the F12 ePSA (enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment) hardware diagnostics from your Dell BIOS.  Instructions are available in the Dell support article How to Run a Preboot Diagnostic Test on a Dell Computer and a companion YouTube video is posted at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cfFECs5Qa0.

If you run the command powercfg /batteryreport from a command prompt your Windows OS will generate a detailed report named battery-report.html that shows an estimate of your remaining battery life at the end of that report.

There are also free hardware diagnostic tools like NirSoft's BatteryInfoView at https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/battery_information_view.html (scroll down near the bottom of that page for the download link) and HWiNFO at https://www.hwinfo.com/download/ (a good general diagnostic tool for all hardware components) that will show an estimate of the % life remaining for your battery.  Both utilities are available as portable (.zip) builds that you can unzip and run from any location, including a removable USB stick, without needing to install the utility on your hard drive.  The images below show the battery in my Inspiron laptop is currently down to ~ 38% of its original designed capacity.

If your battery is the only hardware you want to diagnose I'd recommend BatteryInfoView, which can provide a real-time estimate of your remaining minutes of battery time (measured every 30 seconds or whatever interval you choose) depending on your current workload.
