No sound from DVDs played with Windows Media Player

Just installed a new DVD-RAM drive (and Nero 7) on my 4 year old Dimension 2400 (with intergrated audio) running Windows XP SP2.  Then checked out CD and DVD operations and all work ok except I get no sound from DVDs when reading them with Windows Media Player (Version 11) - they play fine with Nero.

I've had 2 suggestions:

1. Add an audio cable from the DVD-RAM drive to the CD audio connector (J8) on the system board.  I don't think this will help as there has never been a cable in this location and all other sound works fine.

2. Install PowerDVD - but this costs bucks and I don't know if it will correct my problem.

Any advice is appreciated

I have the exact same problem and computer, more or less.  I just installed an HP 840 DVD+RW/Lightscribe in my system right after I erased/formatted and reinstalled the factory XP Home OS.  I can play CD's and get audio fine.  I can play the DVD movie in Nero 7 but no audio.  Cannot open DVD in WMP 11, but can play songs from my hard drive through WMP.  Installed Interactual and get a video error message talking about resolution and colors ????

I googled around and there was someone advising a person on another forum to install AC3 filter, which I have done - still same problem.

Please help.  Thanks!

ps.  Dell Dimension 2400 purchased about 3 years ago or more.  XP Home with SP2.  Attempted DVD with WMP, Interactual, and Nero 7.

Bkess,

I do not use Windows media Player for DVD playback, but, since the drive
works with Nero for DVD playback sound, it would suggest that the problem
may be a sound setting is Windows Media Player.  It may be as simple of
how the speakers are set up. Go to Tools, then Options and select the DVD
tab.  Check there for how it is configured.

You can try VLC Media Player here .........

To Bluesman001: The suggestion I received to install 'Power DVD' came from an associate who, like you, got no sound from DVDs when using Nero 7.  He installed Power DVD and it corrected his problem so maybe it will help you too. But because Nero 7 works for me I'm not ready to try it.
