error code 0f00:0244 Is this an error with the math coprocessor (0f00)

The Scoop:

My room mate has a Dell Inspiron 1100 that runs Windows XP for an OS. The faceplate keeping the keyboard is off and the keyboard is able to come off. My room mate ran a program last night called symptom tree, a diagnostic program that he had in his CD ROM drive. It was checking the IDE disk, the read test. Suddenly, a window pops up with an error message:

Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected

error code 0f00:0244  Msg. block 33273035

If  I am not mistaken, isn't 0f00 the math coprocessor? I am only beginning in IT professionalism. Please tell me what's going on. From all the message boards I haven't found out what this error code is. Some have come close but all they say is to replace the hard drive. Should I advise him to do that or what?

thanks

justin

If you were performing an IDE diagnostic test, and an error message like this was displayed, it sounds like there may be a bad sector on the hard drive.

FYI-It is almost unheard of to run into a math co-processor error.
