cd/dvd Rom reads only dvds not cds.

Hi,

Recently i have got a problem with my cd/dvd rom  , ( I am using Inspiron 6400 ) .
It recognizes and plays dvds but not cds . When a cd is inserted it stops playing it .

I dont knw why this is coming .. .Also unluckily i have got my os crashed recently ...there is no way to re-install or re-pair it until i got my cd/dvd rom ready ...(there is no floppy drive ..outdated) ...tried making my usb drive bootable ...but in vain ....

the only tthing i can do now is take the hard disk out ...connect it others and install os some where and board it back.

But this cd issue ...did any one face this before ?????.....

Thanks,

Chaitanya K.

I am experiencing the same issue with my C600. I can play DVDs fine, but can't see CD-roms. I am interested in seeing what others may say, but I am currently researching this and if I come across something, I will let you know!

All,

Try running the Optical Drive test from the Dell Diagnostics (link in the FAQ).  When you run the test, put a disc of the type that is not being read into the drive.  The test will attempt to read the disc.  If the read test fails then the drive needs to be replaced.  Combo drives have 2 lasers and it is possible for one laser to fail.

i tried the test, was unsuccessful in completing the task. luckily for me, i was able to return the laptop and get my money back which I will repurpose into a new laptop, DELL of course. my researching lead me to find that the only real cure for this is a new DVD/ CDRom drive...I tried a known good drive, and it worked, so I figure it was the drive, but again, I was able to return it, so no problem here. I was also going to get a DVD-R for it anyway, so that would have worked too...
