proper way to update iDRAC 6 firmware on PowerEdge R910? and missing FW formats

Hi, I have troubles connecting to iDRAC with a browser due to expired certificates or lack of support for newer TLS protocols, etc. I have to connect using a hack (a windows sandbox running an old Firefox browser).

This R910 is running VMWare ESXi 5.5.

My iDRAC 6 firmware is at 1.98  (Build 08). I've read elsewhere on this forum that the proper way to upgrade firmware is in steps, so I've done my research and found that the Dell Support Page for the R910 lists the following available iDRAC 6 FW versions (Dell iDRAC Monolithic Release) for my R910 (yes I'm looking at options for my service tag)

  • 2.90 - latest
  • 2.85
  • 1.99
  • 1.98

So I have to download all these 4 and apply them in order -> 1.98, 1.99, 2.85, 2.90. However there are many inconsistencies in the documentation and/or formats available:

In the Release Notes for v2.90_A00, the supported systems DO NOT INCLUDE the PowerEdge R910

https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER04448381M/1/iDRAC6_2.90_A00_ReleaseNotes.pdf?uid=678604c7-19f4-4456-e0e7-eeffe30f0457&fn=iDRAC6_2.90_A00_ReleaseNotes.pdf

So, why am I seeing this update as a recommended option for the R910? Is the documentation OK? Should I stop my upgrades at 2.85 instead? Please advise.

Also, regarding download formats, for my OS (VMware ESXi 5.5) the file that I'm offered is a .bin format file (ESM_Firmware_9GJYW_LN32_2.90_A00.BIN for the latest version).

However if I click in 'Older versions' I am redirected to a page where I don't have the option of downloading something for ESXi 5.5 even though the URL is pointing to 'oscode=xi55'

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=j7yyk&oscode=xi55&productcode=poweredge-r910

I only see downloadble files for Red Hat Linux (.bin); 'An application' (.exe; Windows 64-bit?); and Windows 32-bit (.EXE); besides the PDF (release notes) and .sign files.

Am I safe to assume .bin is the same for RHEL and VMware?

Thanks in advance for any help. Best -- fernan

Just adding that the Dell R910 is listed when looking under 'Compatible systems' in https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=9gjyw&oscode=xi55&productcode=poweredge-r910

Hello, welcome back to Dell community.
I'm glad you were able to find version 2.9
For your question,
"Am I safe to assume .bin is the same for RHEL and VMware?" -> I recommed using .exe; Windows 64-bit .
Hope this helps. If you need further explanation on my end, please let me know.
Resepctfully,
