PowerEdge R340 internal SSD add is a mystery
All I want to do is add an SSD HDD where the optical drive would be (server not supplied with one) and although the correct power cable (Dell MGRV7) for the optical drive is available, it does not seem to have all the power pins for an SSD. An optical drive probably only needs 12v to run, but an SSD needs at least 5V and 12V. Question is, does the correct cable even exist? The technical guide and system board reference:
24 | HDD/ODD_PWR | Optical drive power connector |
When I restart the machine with SSD connected, no additional drive is found. Has anyone done this?

Hello thanks for choosing Dell.
This isn't working of course not- it's not designed for what you wish to do. It's for an optical drive like a DVD-ROM. Hope this helps.

@DELL-Young E I respectfully disagree. All documentation refers to an HDD/ODD so it could be either one. I just tested the SSD by using a SATA cable directly to laptop and I can access the SSD drive just fine. It's now a matter of adding it to the physical disks connected to the PERC controller. Looks like I need to go through iDRAC on boot to find and add the disk as a non RAID virtual disk.

Hello,
Dell has not validated or support any configuration to attach SSD HDD to the optical connection even though there is a connector on the system board, it us unused in Dell configuration. As you have found we don't have any cable for that.
I can let you know a hardware PERC does not control that connection.
You may go into the BIOS > Embedded SATA > try RAID mode enables imbedded S140 controller.
Then BIOS > Device settings > Dell PERC S140 configuration utility
See if that works.
Maybe someone in the community has tried and can share their experience.

@DELL-Charles R Understood. I agree that it is not a simple plug and play available option, but the only option I have right now to add this drive. I will look for this drive in the embedded SATA menu to see if it shows up. Thank you for looking into this.
