2300MP, thick black horizontal bar in the display
So the title gives it all away :-( The projector boots up with the Dell logo against a white background and a black bar running horizontally just above the median. Its there from the get go. If the projected image was say 10' high it'd be at least a foot of that, so definitely gets in the way bigtime. No flickering or waving, just solid from boot up to closedown. Colour test cycle works fine . . . if you don't mind the black bar in the foreground. All controls on the machine work as they should, with the addition of this bar running across the middle. A mystery!
I have no idea what the cause could be, but I'm technically handy and could probably source and install a replacement part if I know what to look for. Any ideas? Internal video card mebby?

When you do the color test does the black bar stay there? Also, have you tried different devices/cables on the projector (I don't think this will matter as it is on the Dell screen, but just curious)?

Hey there Brad, & thanks for getting back to me so promptly. To answer your questions, yes the bar is there from the get go as I said, whether the unit is plugged in to a PC or not. On this machine the boot up screen features a Dell logo against a white background until the projector finds the signal from the PC, but as soon as that boot up screen comes on the bar appears too. The colour test works fine except the black bar is there. I've tried three different PCs and two cables in all combinations and its always there. Its there whether I have a cable attached or not. There is no escape; I am doomed. (Sorry, been reading too much Edgar Allen Poe) . . .

Thanks for getting back with me. No worries on the Poe :), unfortunately this sounds like the projector is bad/failing like you mentioned, I am not sure if you searched for this elsewhere yet, and while there look to be some old threads, I have not seen much. The best I found was this link.
You're right that it could just be a bad board, but is not something I have personally attempted. I do recall one time on a DLP tv replacing caps, but I stumbled upon the schematics on an old AVS thread (and this wasn't a Dell one etc.), also, in that case it was a bit easier since it was just a power issue, and not image/display related.
