M4700 Motherboard Types?

Greetings to the Dell community!

We recently purchased a Precision M4700 that's still in great shape.  I wanted to find one with either of the two "switchable" nVidia dedicated GPU options - Quadro K1000M or Quadro K2000M - but I couldn't find one that was still in mint shape that we could afford.  This being the case, we ended up with an M4700 that came from Dell with the dedicated AMD FirePro M4000 GPU card.

I was informed, earlier today, that the motherboards for the M4700 mobile workstations were designed around the GPU options.  In other words, I was told that there was a motherboard version made exclusively for the nVidia dedicated GPU card(s) and another motherboard version made exclusively for said AMD dedicated GPU card.

If this  is true, I'd really appreciate knowing the Dell part numbers for these two versions of M4700 motherboards?  I'd also like to know if the Dell M4700 folks have had good luck finding drivers that work with the Windows XP 32-bit operating system?

Thank you for your time and have a great day ~

Finally, this thread is unlocked for posting responses.  Hopefully, my reply is not too late to provide needed information to both of your questions.

Regarding the motherboard question, the assumption that motherboard version was made exclusively depending to dedicated GPU is not correct.

For example, the motherboard Dell 082H3V can support both AMD FirePro M4000 (similar to your machine), or Nvidia Quadro K2000M.  Another different motherboard Dell 0WWPJY can support AMD FirePro M4000 Mobility Pro Graphics, or Nvidia Quadro K2000M.

Regarding drivers question, drivers for Windows XP 32-bit are available from Dell Support website.  You must select Find drivers, then click on appropriate operating systems among the drop down selection.  Screenshot for XP 32-bit including graphics drivers below.

I really appreciate the informative response, @Chino de Oro

Unfortunately, the really nice Dell M4700 that we purchased for use as a Win XP machine is now dead.  Not totally, but pretty much everything but the FHD (1920 x 1080) screen - which passes all display tests with flying "colors" - show no signs of life.  Put another way, the machine starts only to the point where the indicators above the keyboard stay lit, but nothing - and I do mean nothing - ever appears on the nice FHD display.  Even with the Intel i7-3940XM factory CPU option, it's still an old machine, so the fact that it came with Win 11 installed had me wondering from the start.

Regardless, I'm back looking for the "right" motherboard, so many thanks for the information about the various mobo options.  I'm also thinking that it may be a good idea to look for the best available GPU board that will work with this machine's nice display, but the fact that it will be used, at least at first, as a Win XP machine gives me pause.  In other words, for now, we can only buy a GPU board that will work with Win XP.

Do you happen to have any thoughts about which motherboard and GPU PCB combination will give us the best performance operating via Win XP?

Thank you for your time!

@McQuadM4700 , buy parts and update piece meals is asking for troubles.  The machines for your needs happened to be outdated.  So, many are cheaply sold as a whole unit.  If you prefer Dell brand, Latitude and Precision are durable for business uses.

Depending on your location, market, you can find them refurbished with warranty to protect your investment.

@Chino de Oro - Thanks again for posting.  Let me explain our situation a bit further and, perhaps, that will clarify things a bit more.

We have been tasked with a project that requires the use of an old 32-bit abandonware utility that - as described by folks who do this for a living - can only be run via the 32-bit Win XP OS.

I'm a longtime Mac user, but my research is telling me that the 3rd generation of Intel CPUs is the last that can run Windows XP without some serious headaches ... which brings me back to the Dell M4700.  As we need to be able to move a PC from one place to another efficiently, a laptop is required for the project.

The Dell machine referenced herein is well-known to be a heavy duty mobile modular workstation that can be worked on easily.  Unfortunately, the mint condition M4700 that we purchased has died on us, but, once again, this machine lends itself to repair, so, naturally, we're endeavoring to restore it to proper operation ... but I digress.

The important thing right now is that folks in a similar situation may need to read a few things that I've discovered.  If, as we are, you're working on a Dell M4700 with the 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Dell Ultrasharp WLED display option - not the 15.6" HD (1366x768) RGB LED screen option - Dell used three different motherboards with three different part numbers that work with your display screen: 0WWPY, 2PR7R & 35JKV.

The M4700 Precision Work Station was also offered with the following three dedicated GPU (dGPU) options:

(1)  AMD FirePro M4000 Mobility Pro with 1GB GDDR5 dedicated memory;
(2)  NVIDIA Quadro K1000M with 2GB GDDR3 dedicated memory; and
(3)  NVIDIA Quadro K2000M with 2GB GDDR3 dedicated memory.

All three of these dGPU options are MXM-A (3.0) stand-alone PCBs that can be used with any of the three motherboards listed above.  The only difference is that ether nVidia option - the Quadro K1000M or the Quadro K2000M -  requires a unique heat sink, which is identified by Dell via part number: MXNR9.

By the way, there seem to be alternate part numbers in use for the aforementioned Dell M4700 motherboards.  The one that I've seen the most is LA-7931P.  I haven't actually proven this by trying one out, but this part number seems to cross to either Dell 2PR7R or Dell 35JKV.

As this information wasn't easy to find, I hope that it saves another Dell M4700 owner some time and headaches.
