Changing GPU on precision 7730

Hi

Does anyone know if it is possible to change the GPU on precision 7730 later on?

The GPU is on a separate board, so it can be replaced -- whether any upgrades will work is open to question, but the GPU isn't part of the mainboard on this model.

I'm having an issue with this. I was told before I ordered my7730 via a "chat" that I would be able to do it.

So I bought the system with Intel HD GFX and now 7 months later, I would like to get a P4200.

Recently, I was told "Is it technically feasible to upgrade the graphics card in the system?  Yes.  However, there is no officially supported upgrade path, as evidenced there being no customer upgrade kit for the card."

Note: As many of you know, Dell's service manual is available for the 7730. So changing the card should not be an issue for many people. I, for one, have already replaced the heatsink and system board because of a "spontaneous power off" issue I was having shortly after receiving the unit.

They eventually sent me a quote which contained the price for the P4200 at $2188.74.

The issue I have is with the price. Based on the fact that I can by a complete 7730 with P4200 for $2245.89

and that the P4200 is currently an $857.25 increase from the HD GFX (which the card being replaced probably costs approx. $100) ,  I think the $2188.74 is price gouging, sad to say. I think a reasonable cost would be approx $1000 or maybe $1100.

Dell suggested I try to get pricing from one of their partners, which I did, but the pricing they were getting from Dell still was exorbitant.

If somehow Dell decides to reduce the price, I will provide an update. I hope they do. I am (or at least was) very pro-Dell having used their laptops and desktops, at home and work, for as long as I can remember. This is the first issue I've had and it is not a technical one.

Dell, please reconsider your pricing. Ref. quote # 747147005

"Intel HD GFX" isn't a card at all. Its integrated into the CPU.

The precision 7730 is a laptop not a desktop.  So in general there are no card slots to "upgrade" or add an upgrade.  The one probably not supported path would be THUNDERBOLT3 EGPU.

The Options

Radeon Pro WX 4150 w/4GB GDDR5
Radeon Pro WX 7100 w/8GB GDDR5
Nvidia Quadro P3200 w/6GB GDDR5
Nvidia Quadro P4200 w/8GB GDDR5

are not discrete MXM cards so "adding" them later on is not really an option.

CPU and GPU are BGA soldered they are not in a socket or slot.

Edit:  Looking at the board now. UMA generally stands for unified memory architecture. It indirectly refers to the fact that integrated graphics card uses the system RAM because it does not have any of its own integrated RAM.  There are no references whatsoever to MXM being an option.

The post about the GPU being soldered on 7730 is completely wrong. The card is not an MXM module, but a new Dell-specific form-factor called DGFF. For integrated graphics, almost empty (but not completely empty -- with graphics connectors and some capacitors) board is used as interposer. But the absence of DGFF card for 7730 is just strange -- they are only for 7730, so why don't sell them for profit indeed? Have 7730 with integrated graphics too and want to upgrade. There were 2 p4200's sold on eBay some time ago around $750 but haven't seen them before they were gone. So please post any updates here if an upgrade path can be found, will post updates here too if I find one.

From reading the service manual, it looks like the arrow in the previous post indicates the CPU, not the GPU.  It seems the CPU is soldered but the GPU is a separate board.  Looks too small to be MXM 3.0b, so yeah.  Does anybody have a link to Dell-published official information about this?

Hello. Is it possible to change the GPU to older model? For example Quadro P5000? I have precision 7720 with this card. The only part, that I'm not satisfied is CPU, I7 6920HQ. I found good deal for 7730 with i7 8850H, that is around 40% faster. The only problem is that it has P3200. If I could replace it with my GPU I could sell my 7720 with P3200 for almost identical price. And if not the same my wife wouldn't realize I spend money for newer laptop because they look identical:)
