Precision 7920 Tower Operating System (Boot) Drive

Hello!

I never used Precision Desktop. Can someone please explain what is the purpose of Operating System (Boot) Drive? Why do we use it?

Is it mandatory to boot from these or we can boot OS from an internal drive that is connected directly to the motherboard?

What are these options? And how many drives we can add in each option?

Intel NVMe PCIe SSD (Front PCIe FlexBay)
Internal PCIe SSD (Dell Ultra-Speed Drive)
MRAID 9660 Cnt Front FlexBay NVMe SSD Boot
Please guide me because I don't have any knowledge regarding Flexbay.
Thanks in Advance

Purpose of a boot drive is to load operating system to the machine.  The boot drive in your question should be the same as internally connected drive you are thinking about.  Boot drive in flexbay, in an UltraSpeed adapter, or backplane connected to MegaRaid, they all are connected to motherboard.

The number of drives and their capacities are depending to the storage controllers and backplane in system configurations.  For example, you can connect more front PCIe flexbay to a MegaRaid controller than using integrated controller.  You can see and use up to x4 NVMe SSD in an UltraSpeed when installing to a x16 PCIe slot vs. using a x8 PCIe slot.

Since the flexbay would allow you to remove one drive and insert another drive, so how many drives can be used at the flexbay can be considered infinite.

You can refer to the Precision 7920 technical guide book for more information.
