BIOS RECOVERY and how it works

Hi, I have a Dell Precision 5820 W2133

I was having a an error message come up, i will post below, after putting in a brand new ssd card.

The sugesstion via the dell website was to update the BIOS., to see if it solved the problem.

The BIOS version that was on their was: 2.18.0, 13/04/22

I updated to the next one up which was: 2.24.0, 13/12/22 with no issues.

The next update, i am trying to get the most up to date version slowly as recommened from the internet.

2.25.0 09/01/23 started fine, but then the screen turned black, it finally restarted itself and now it won't post.

I have seen on other post that there is a BIOS recovery program, that could restore the PC to the previos version.

I need help with the instructions and where to find the recovery file please. I think i still have either warranty or helpdesk. Not really sure, as i am the second owner, but i have something in date still.

OR contact dell and if its possible, fingers crossed, send it to them to get it sorted out.  Obviously that will take some time.

Please advise.

This is the current BIOS firmware for the 5820 from Dell support site  https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=mky35&oscode=wt64a&productcode=precision-5820-workstation

Any Dell computer that is shipped after December 2015 that has the Intel SkyLake chipset, supports BIOS Recovery 2.

Any Dell computer that is shipped after August 2016 or with the Intel Kaby Lake chipset, supports BIOS Recovery 3.

How to recover BIOS on a Dell computer or tablet system  https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000132453/how-to-recover-the-bios-on-a-dell-computer-or-tablet

For BR2, you put a BIOS recovery image on a FAT32 formatted USB drive.  Use a combine Ctrl + Esc keys, while introduce power to the system (pushing power button).  Press and hold until the keyboard light lights up then release the keys.  A recovery screen will come up, follow instruction to perform BIOS flash.

If you still can select F2 (BIOS settings) or F12 (one time boot menu), you can put firmware image file on a USB drive and select F12 to flash firmware independent of operating system.  Scroll down from BIOS firmware page for instructions.

Hi Chino,

That's very helpful, i will give those a try.

One more question please. From research it says not to update BIOS to the latest version if you are more than 2 versions out of date. Mine is significantly more, if I put the latest version on that would be ok?

This is the first time I am doing this type of update, just want some clarity. Thanks.

Also, this PC is about 3-3.5 years old.

As you have learnt, updating BIOS firmware could rendered your machine inoperable.  So, minimizing the number of firmware update process could also reduce the risk of bricking your machine.

The latest BIOS firmware from previous post is okay to be used for recovery option.  If succeed, it will bring your system firmware up to date.
