Dell 3820I Firmware istallation

Hope someone can help here. We have an M3820I SAN in which both controllers have failed at once, so we are unable to access the drives on the SAN.

We found a refurbished controller, but it came with the wrong firmware, now we are unable to update the controller with the correct firmware. Dell no longer has that firmware on its support. The company we bought the refurbished controller from has said if we send back the microcode kit, they can update the firmware to the one we need, but since then the correspondence with them has gone cold, any idea where the microcode kit is located, or any suggestions on how to access the data on the SAN

The Firmware is available if you go to dell.com/support.  Yes.. only the current and one older version is there.

Wish it was that easy. The firmware we require is a really old version no longer available on the Dell support site The M3820I SAN we have, both controllers failed at the same time, so we are unable to access the SAN and the data on it. We purchased a refurbished controller but came with the wrong Firmware, with both controllers out of action on the SAN we are unable to copy over the correct firmware from the other controller. We been back in contact with the company we bought the controller from, and they asked for the microcode kit to be sent back to them, and they will load the correct firmware onto it require and then send it back with the correct firmware. We have asked for the location of the microcode kit on the SAN itself or the controller but since then and it's been a week had no response back. Any suggestions to get the correct firmware on this refurbished controller or access the data which could be spread across 8-9 drives

Says it needs 8.20.9.60

The only version I can see on Dell's website available to update is 8.25.14.60

Info: Your screenshot isnt visible yet.

Question: Why dont you think that updating to the latest doesnt solve your problem?

In the last 20 years we have dozens of customer with MD3000, MD32xx,34xx, ME4,ME5.  The PV MD3 where a LSI-Engino product and the management software was SanTricity and Dell rebranded the stuff. Around a dozen of other Vendors sell the same HW under its own brand.

I'll take a look if i found some older packages in my archive.

Unfortunately, every time we go to update the SAN goes into lock down because of the version of firmware on the refurbished controller, if we had one working controller wouldn't be an issue but with both original controllers not working we need the original version of firmware for it actually to work

Hi,

Based on the email screenshot that you provided, I gave a check on the case opened, and the support agent did engage a Level 2 support to check the issue. The email did mention to check if your old archive do have the old downloaded firmware file, if you are not able to obtain that, please contact back the support agent. The Level 2 support can try to liaise with backend engineering to check if the file is still available in the support file archives. My suggestion to contact back the support engineer in the email.

By the way, I would like to mention the email screenshot that you attached, it contains your private information of the server, and this forum is publicly exposed. Hence I have deleted the picture to safeguard your information.

@Shaun69

  1. I have found your requestet  8.20.9.60 in our archive. Drop me a PM and offer an upload URL
  2. I think you mis-understood the "error" message.  You need to upgrade MDSM FIRST befor try to upload a newer Firmware. MDSM support rescent and older Firmwares but not newer(unknown)
