PS500T with 12x2TB and 2 HotSpare not have 20TB but 14TB, why ?

Hello to all.

We use PowerStore 500T with 12x 2TB NVMe SSD,

12 x 2TB (24TB total) but with ProDeploy we select "Raid6" as 2 HotSpare drive and we not have a 20TB of space but only 14TB.

We know that times with old RAID Level are gone, now all vendors use some own LVM called Block array and each disk is part of each raid level etc. but what calculation is was here to get 14TB from 24TB ?

This means we have a 58% of total disks.

We buy PS500T with "sales warranty" if a physical disk will be not enough, then we receive new ones for free.

Our system is compose for 60TB and with ratio 4:1 that 14TB is like tightly fitted. Other people say about 2,5:1 ratio what warry me but we have free slots :).

Anyone know how this was calculated ?

Hello,

  1. There is no 2TB disk. Its a 1.92TB one which gets around 1.76 space or so
  2. There is TiB vs. TB

To get 60TB with a 4:1 DRR and a double redundancy you need 12 Disks.

We size with 2:1 and get 2.5:1 in real life with in a typical VMware environment. But thats with 1/3 or 1/2  space consumption after the data migration. So expect higher values when you put more data on.

Joerg
