Present PowerStore Volume to Windows Host

Hi All,

Anyone can share me how to present the volume to windows server? I able to present the volume as a datastore in the ESXi but I'm not found the way to present the volume in the Windows Server physical host in any PowerStore documentation. In the documentation, there have about host configuration on Windows Server but not fully explained.

I also check in any video over internet (such as youtube, etc) also not found the steps to do it. Appreciate any assistance on this matter. Thanks

Isnt its the same way as for your ESXi Hosts?   What kind of Frontend (FC,iSCSI) and when using a Fabric for FC do you have configure propper zoning? Create a Host Object and seeing the HBA WWNs works?

Be carefull when you try to let access your windows Hosts the ESXi LUNs. The one and only usecase is when having a Backup Software which reads from the SAN. It was not clear if you just want present the same Volume or a new one.

Hi @Origin3k ,

  1. Try to ping all related iSCSI Ports on the PowerStore form your Commvault Server - Noted
  2. Setup iSCSI on windows and try to "reach" the PowerStore so the system can see that someone is knocking on the door.  Do you use CHAP or so? - No CHAP as per I know. For the steps, this is the standard configuration of setup ISCSI on window (iSCSI initiator page) right?
  3. Create the Host object and see if you can see the WWN or better the IQN of the Commvault Server - This one you mean is to create the host on the PowerStore Manager?
  4. Quest: Does the ESXi Hosts connecting trough iSCSI or NVMe-over-TCP? - all the ESXi Host is connecting via iSCSI

Just to confirm sir, but step to create volume, add host for the physical server in the PowerStore should be same as we so on the ESXi host?

Because its a Backupserver there is a chance that your customer try to get access to the ESXi Volumes because part of the VADP (vSphere API for DataProtection) is the possibility for "SAN Backup" rather than  HotAdd or NBD.   But as long as you are unable to create the Host object the answer to that questions doesnt matter.

Quest: Does the ESXi Hosts connecting trough iSCSI or NVMe-over-TCP?  I ask because the later one isnt supportet on windows i think.

We use iSCSI since 2008 together with PowerVault, EqualLogic, Compellent and Powerstore and nothing major changed here. Right now no customer have connected a Windows box to the Powerstore like in previous setups because we have Veeam together with "Backup from SAN Snapshot" and there a phys. Windows Hosts needs access to the PowerStore.

Hi @Origin3k ,

Thank for your reply. Here some of input regarding to your query

1) Isnt its the same way as for your ESXi Hosts?   What kind of Frontend (FC,iSCSI)

- Yes, it same way as we using the iSCSi connection where the the ESXi host, PowerStore and also that Windows physical host connected to the same data switch

- This host is CommVault Backup Server host (physical). Now customer request to present volume or attached the PowerStore to that physical server host. I believe it request me to create a new volume and present there.

2. Yes, the Windows default iSCSI config tool

3. Yes, every Host must be onboarded first and the WWN/iQN are recorded within the PowerStore Manager
