emc powerpath on freenas - learning and testing lab

hi .. new to emc powerpath ,

environment

os : rhel 6.4 x86_64 ( virutal box )

storage : freenas v9 ( on virtual box )

i try to setup learning and test env on virtual box to leaning installation emc powerpath  before i install on production server .

i try to download emc powerpath ( unlicense ) .

i able to install emc power path by #rpm -ivh EMCPower.LINUX-5.7.1.00.00-029.RHEL6.x86_64.rpm .

the setup as below on my notebook ( all on virtual box )

freenas setup

1. install freenas with 2 network card ( 192.168.56.101 , 192.168.60.101 )

2. setup iscsi server and share out 10GB from iscsi protocol

3.done.

rhel 6.4 setup

1. install base server with gui

2. install EMCPower.LINUX-5.7.1.00.00-029.RHEL6.x86_64.rpm .

3. install iscsi client ( install iscsi-initiator-utils-6.2.0.873-2.el6.x86_64 )

4. setup iscsi disk

  #iscsiadm -m discovery

#iscsiadm -m node

#fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sdb: 10.7 GB, 10737418240 bytes

64 heads, 32 sectors/track, 10240 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 = 1048576 bytes

Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 1048576 bytes

Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Disk /dev/sdc: 10.7 GB, 10737418240 bytes

64 heads, 32 sectors/track, 10240 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 = 1048576 bytes

Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 1048576 bytes

Disk identifier: 0x00000000

# scsi_id --whitelisted --replace-whitespace --device=/dev/sdb

33000000033d942fe

# scsi_id --whitelisted --replace-whitespace --device=/dev/sdc

33000000033d942fe

5. run powermt command

#cd /etc/init.d/

#./PowerPath start

#powermt display dev=all

Device(s) not found.

6. no native multipath software install

# rpm -qa | grep multi

so my question as below :

1. is possible powerpath ( EMCPower.LINUX-5.7.1.00.00-029.RHEL6.x86_64.rpm ) support this type of setup for learning purpose .

2. if yes can you provide some guide line to me ? tq

after that , i try to install native mutlipath ( device-mapper-multipath ) and configure , native multipath able to manage iscsi multipath on freenas .

hope some can point to me the correct way to learn powerpath ..

Firstly, welcome to the forums, and above all, thank you for your interest in EMC.

Please consider moving this question as-is (no need to recreate) to the proper forum for maximum visibility.  Questions written to the users' own "Discussions" space don't get the same amount of attention and can go unanswered for a long time.

You can do so by selecting "Move" under ACTIONS along the upper-right.  Then search for and select: "PowerPath".

PowerPath

PowerPath can only claim/manage LUNs from a specific list of third party storage array vendors.  As you already have witnessed, FreeNAS is not one of them.  The complete list of supported non-EMC vendors is listed in the PowerPath ESM (EMC Support Matrix) available from the E-Lab Interoperability Navigator portal/database.

Hi Yeow,

PowerPath does not support the storage system you are using (freenas), and therefore will not claim its devices.
