Using a Dell R730XD as plex server, do I need to use a specific OS to use a Raid to manage data properly?

Hello, Hope the description isn't to confusing. Let me explain, I'm planning on using a Dell R730 XD as a plex server but I had a question on the raid setup. Do I need to use a version of windows server to setup a raid properly and maintain it? I was planning on populating each bay with 14 TB drives and raid 1 each dual set of drives. Such as drive 1 contains accessed data and drive 2 is a back up of drive 1 data and so on. Can I still do this if I install windows 10 or would I run into issues and would be better off running windows server?

Hello, thanks for choosing Dell and welcome to our community.
I'm afraid installing a laptop/desktop OS on a server is not recommend. Installation itself may not even be succesful to begin with.

The R730xd is an excellent choice for a plex server.  I currently have mine populated with 8 x 10tb drives and a 1070ti for transcoding.  I would not recommand running windows on the server because they are service hogs.  I installed Centos 9 Stream on my system and it runs amazingly.  My server is set to Raid 5 and have no issues.  One of the other good things with linux is you can buy another R730xd and rsync between the two servers to ensure your system is always backed up.  Also, I would recommand utilizing the two rear hard drives and mirroring them.  Do not use SSDs because I had a lot of issues.  Instead buy two 500gb enterprise drives and install your OS on those drives.  With this setup it is very clean and easy to maintain.  I've been running my Plex with deal servers and linux for the past 10 years.  The R730xd can be very loud with the fans running but there is an IPMI command that you can look up and reduce the fan noise.  Once I ran that on the system it is very and you almost don't realize it is even running.  Hope this helps!
