PowerEdge 6400/500 clean install W2K
I had NT 4.0 on a retired server so I blow it out to do a clean install of W2K and here is the problem that I encountered.
I updated the Bios ver and used the correct dirvers during setup for the perc scsi card.
I have a PE6300/500 w/ Perc 3di firmware ver 2.0 card and while installing W2K a message was told to upgrade the firmware to ver 2.1 or I won't see the arrays.
Setup went fine no problems but I'm unable to see the 2 other containers that I created in the scsi setup ( did I do this right?) with the array manager software. I looked for the firmware update on the dell web site and was unable to find it.
The card is a Adaptec AIC 7890 (is this the perc card?) Here is the system tag off the machine # 7I9A4.
Any help on this would be great..
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike,
Your PowerEdge 6300 actually has one Adaptec AIC 7860 (Cdrom) and two Adaptec AIC 7890's (hard drives when there is no raid controller) embedded on the motherboard. This system also shipped with the Adaptec based Perc 2/qc raid controller.
These are the latest System Upgrades for the PowerEdge 6300 and the Perc 2/qc running Win2000. Install in this order:
Install the ESM Firmware, then the System BIOS on the PowerEdge 6300
ESM Firmware, Multi System, A42
Filename: a42cust.exe (397 KB)
Note: Extract the files to a DOS bootable floppy disk. Boot the server to this floppy disk, and run smflsh.exe.
System BIOS, PowerEdge 6300, A13
FileName: PE6300-BIOSA13.exe [477 KB]  Release Date: 6/17/2003
Adaptec Perc 2/qc, Firmware, v.2.8.0.6089, A13
FileName: PERC2-280_6089.exe [1 MB]  Release Date: 4/14/2004
Adaptec Perc 2/si, 2/qc, 3/si, 3/di, Driver, Windows 2000, v.2.8.0.6085, A15
FileName: W2K-2806085.exe [259 KB]  Release Date: 4/14/2004
This document explains the installation procedure in detail.
Thanks for using the Dell Community Forums!

Mark,
Thanks for the documents and drivers all installed very easy (no erros this time) but I have another question should I use the array manager software fom the CD (ver1.0) or use the the downloaded NT_APP_280-6046-A13.exe
The reason I ask is because I'm still unable to see the arrays. ain I created a container in the scsi bios but am unable to see it in windows?

You must have one version of raid management software installed in order to see the arrays in Win2000.
NT_APP_280-6046-A13.exe is the Adaptec version of raid management software. The recommended raid management software is Dell OpenManage Array Manager. This is the latest version:
Dell OpenManage Array Manager NW, 2000, 2003, v.3.5.0.555.4, A02
FileName: a350a02.exe [78 MB]  Release Date: 2-23-2004
Array Manager Documentation
Thanks

for help. I have the same basic problems with installing W2K Server onto
the PowerEdge 6300 I have: Not being able to install the PERC driver
and the containers/partitions not being recognized by the setup. When I got the
server, all of the..or shall I say the majority of the main drivers and management software were
updated already, and whatever wasn't updated it, I updated it. The only thing
that wasn't installed and what needed not be updated was the ESM
software.
I've followed all of the directions in the posts that answered the
problems and nothing worked. I made a floppy disk that has the installed
PERC drivers and the W2K install never ever recognized the drivers on the
disk. Wasn't recognized on the W2K CD. I created 3 containers with
sizes of 8 GB, 7 GB and 30 GB. I'm totally lost. It's interesting that
W2K Server won't install, but Win Server 2003 does. And on the PowerEdge
2300 I have, when it was working, W2K Server installed on it.
I don't if I overlooked anything or not.
