R740xd with NVMe drives

Hi all,

I am trying to find what option is better to give best performance:

A - SSD System drives with hardware RAID1 (H730p / H740P) + additional NVMe drives for storage

B - NVMe system drives with RAID1 under S140i + additional NVMe drives for storage.

OS will be Windows Server 2022.

Regards,

JT.

Jtejada.ralco,

From your options and description it would likely be A, as I don't think B would work, as there isn't an option to boot to the OS with it. In order to boot to the OS from just NVme you would need to include a BOSS controller (part # 7HYY4). Now from the performance side of it, I can't speak to that so you may want to get some feedback from the community.

Let me know if this helps.

But BOSS card is M.2 sata? right? what is the card-in that is appearing in this video connecting 2 nvme drives?

Is that card ready for R740xd?

Hello, page 35 may answer you:

https://dell.to/4d3Sqy7

Boot Optimized Storage Subsystem (BOSS) BOSS is a simple RAID solution card that is designed specifically for booting the system's operating system, which supports up to two 6 Gbps M.2 SATA drives. This card has a x8 connector using PCIe gen 2.0 x2 lanes, available only in the low-profile and half-height form factor.

@DELL-Young E

Then, what is the card with NVMe drives shown in this video?

Hi, I don't know, maybe I'm misunderstanding your question, but BOSS card is not M.2 sata. BOSS card is a kind of adapter that allows you to use M.2 NVMe drives in your system. You can take a look this video about NVMe SSDs Overview https://dell.to/4d8TmkF

@DELL-Erman O Thanks for reply but I think you are wrong. As your colleague said BOSS card only supports M.2 SATA drives.

What I am trying to know is what is the best configuration to install OS and maximize the performance to work with 24 x NVMe backplane for storage and 1YGFW cards:

A. SSD hardware raid with H730P / H740P

B. 2 x PCIe add-in NVMe drives

C. BOSS Card with M.2 SATA Drives

Maybe the final question is if a R740xd configuration with 24x NVMe backplane, 2 x PCIe NVMe controller card 1YGFW to enable the 24 slots to U.2 NVMe drives and 2 x NVMe add-in cards with S140 SW RAID for OS would work properly.

Jtejada.ralco,

For the most part I think it will work, but I am not seeing the specific cabling diagram here. To me the limitation would be the S140 and not using a hardware perc.

@DELL-Chris H

Yes, figure 15 is showing this setup with 24 NVMe backplane + 2 x PCIe NVMe controller card 1YGFW.

Also figure 16 showing 24 NVMe backplane + 2 x PCIe NVMe controller + PCIe PERC controller.

Are you saying that is preferable HW RAID with SSD drives instead of SW RAID with NVMe drives? Please note that I am trying to obtain best performance and IOPS.

If you are basing it on performance and not cost then I would go with the hardware controller, as it has a higher performance level.
You can compare the differences here
