PE R650 - How can I convert front NVME slots to SSD SATA ?
I have a 2 yr old PE R650. The orignal configuration was the 8 front NVMe slots. It has the front
PERC H755N RAID. It also has the S150 on-board RAID if I select the setting in BIOS.
I just updated all the firmware on the hardware, idrac, RAID card, etc.
I would like to use SSD or Spinning drives in the front.
When I insert a generic and Dell branded SATA SSD or SAS spinning, the system recognizes a drive has been inserted or removed.
The drives do not appear under the RAID configuration.
Error is : Invalid drive type detected in bay 1, slot 1.
How can I get the system to accept these non NVMe drives?
Do I need to change the backplane?
Thank you.

Hello
Try change the embedded SATA S150 to AHCI
Get a PERC H755 front SAS . Drive types supported: 3 Gbps SATA, 6Gbps SATA/SAS, and 12 Gbps SAS
The existing cable and backplane should work if it is: 2.5-inch (x10) SAS, SATA or NVMe backplane
Note: Field changing of backplane configuration is not generally supported. We don't have kits for that.
I would encourage you to contact Sales and they can gather your criteria and service tag and supply you options available.

Thank you for the reply. The RAID card with "N" at the end makes sense it is for NVMe drives.
I am trying to spend the least amount as these are test systems.
If you have a part # for front NVMe empty enclosure, please send.
My other options are rear carrier or PCI NVMe card.
Thank you.
