Help! Perc H710 raid 5 4 disk array 2 online, 2 missing with one showing foreign state.

Hello,

Im hoping someone can help guide me to get this system up.   I have a T420 with a perc h710 that is not starting due to no boot device.  I looked inside the controller to find that 2 drives missing & 2 online.  Looking at physical disk management tabe it show 3 disks -1 foreign and 2 online.  I don know that 1 of the drives has failed becasue it is clicking.  The order of the drives is : 0 - missing (clicking sound) , 1 - missing (foreign config) , 3 - Online , 4 - Online.  At the start of the system it asks if I want to import the foreign configuration and im not sure what to do as there is only 3 drives showing up and 1 is foreign.  I do have another drive to add as a spare, but again not sure what the best thing to do as its not showing as failed.  Unfortunately back ups s of now is not an option.

Hi,

 

You will not be able to replace the failed drive (Drive 0), the RAID will not rebuild due to insufficient RAID parity. Hence, the only thing you can do is to import foreign. To import foreign, you will need to access to the PERC BIOS and go to Foreign View tab. Hit F2 for operations and Import foreign. Once you have imported, check in VD management if 3 disk are online. If yes, you should be able to access to OS. My advice is to do full data backup once OS is accessible. After the backup, replace the fail disk (Drive 0).

 

Also prepare another spare disk. Drive 1 becomes foreign might due to it is failing soon. You need not replace Drive 1 yet.

  • Do Not Reinitialize: Avoid any actions that could overwrite data.

  • Backup Data: Save any accessible data immediately.

  • Import Foreign Configuration:

    • Enter RAID BIOS (Ctrl+R).
    • Locate and import the foreign configuration.

  • Check Disk Status:

    • Verify the status of all disks.

  • Rebuild the Array:

    • If a disk comes online, the array may auto-rebuild.
    • Otherwise, initiate a manual rebuild.

  • Replace Failed Disks:

    • Replace any confirmed failed disks with identical specs.
    • The controller should start rebuilding automatically.

  • Consider Recovery Software:

    • Use tools like R-Studio or ReclaiMe for additional recovery options.

  • Professional Help:

    • Contact a professional recovery service if needed.
