H730 24 disk RAID 10
Hello,
With a chassis like the R730xd with the 24x 2.5inch drive configuration, is it possible to put all 24 physical disks in a single RAID10 virtual disk?
There are some indications that the limit (with the default RAID10 span setting) is 16 PD's per VD. However there are also some comments that using a span setting of 8 will allow you to create a VD with all 24 PD's.
It isn't entirely clear what exactly an 8 span VD is and the consequences of that. Is that a RAID 0 across 8 RAID1s? Is that a supported / reasonable config to begin with?
Please let me know if I can provide any more information.
Thanks.

Dlotterman,
Not quite possible because H730 controller supports up to 16 Disk Groups (PDs) assigned to any given RAID level. Using a span of 8 on 24 PDs, you can create 3X8 RAID 10 VD arrays. As a consequence, you will have data (RAID 0) stripped across these 3 spans (sets of RAID 1) to create RAID 10 arrays.
This is certainly supported and reasonable configuration to test and begin with.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for your response. So just to clarify, the end result of this is:
3x RAID10 VD's of 8 disks presented to the host OS
Or
1x RAID10 VD of 24 disks presented to the host OS
Thanks again

Yes, you will have 3 Virtual Disks (VDs) of RAID 10 with 8 disks each. However, you can not create a single VD with all 24 disks. The reason being that the H730 controller can support a maximum 16 disks in a single VD.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
