Expand virtual disk on existing RAID6

Hello everyone!

We have a PowerEdge R730xd that has a 11 disk RAID6 and would like to expand the array.

Our server has a PERC H730 Mini (Embedded) running firmware version 25.5.9.0001.

Here's what we'd like to do:

1. Replace each disk, one at a time after the RAID rebuilds.

2. Once all the disks are replaced, can we simply assign the free space to the existing virtual disk?

Thanks!

Hello, thanks for choosing Dell and welcome to our community:

Could you please have a look at this first for overall understanding?

How To Perform Online Capacity Expansion for Dell PERC

For the first question, you replace them all at the same time.

For second, please note just because you are changing to bigger disks it doesn’t mean the VD would also get bigger.

Do not forget to back up the data first, replace the disks all together then proceed with Virtual Disk configuration one more time.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

@DELL-Young E thank you. I need to change the disks as well, since they are full. Therefore, can I swap each disk, one by one, and let it rebuild?

Once I've changed all the disks, will I be able to expand are use the newly available space?

Thanks

What you are referring to is called an Online Capacity Expansion, as explained here, which includes the process or replacing the disks as you stated.

Let me know if this helps.

@DELL-Chris H could you provide more details on this repalce member feature:

"Free space can also be available when a disk group’s physical disks are replaced with larger disks using the Replace Member feature. "

You can find out more details, and the steps needed to perform, on the Replace Member function on page 141 and 142 here. You can also confirm the controller you are using is supported as well.
