Unable to boot after upgrading CPU to E5-2470v2

Hi everyone,

Got a T320 that came with a E5-2407 and set it up with Unraid OS as a small media server. Upgraded the CPU to a E5-2470v2 which I saw was a fairly common upgrade for the T320 but now its failing to boot. It seems to get stuck at the line below:and then reboots and gives an F1/F2 error:
Ive got iDRAC updated to 2.65.65.65 and BIOS updated to 2.9.0 which seemed to be the general consensus on all I need to do for the CPU upgrade.

Any ideas? If you need more information let me know.

Hi,

I’m seeing an ACPI and CPU1 idle states error message after upgrading my CPU, which suggests there might be an issue with the BIOS settings. Here are some steps I’m considering to resolve this:

  1. BIOS Update: Check if there’s a BIOS update available. Updating the BIOS can often resolve compatibility issues with newer CPUs.
  2. Reset BIOS Settings: If updating the BIOS doesn’t help, you can try resetting the BIOS to its default settings. please make sure to note down any custom settings before doing this, so I can reapply them later if needed.
  3. Clear CMOS: If resetting the BIOS doesn’t work, you can try clearing the CMOS. This will reset the BIOS settings to their defaults as well.

Additionally, keep these tips in mind:

  • Ensure the new CPU is properly seated in the socket.
  • Verify that all power connectors are securely plugged into both the motherboard and the CPU.
  • If you have extra RAM or PCI cards installed, you’ll try removing them temporarily to see if that resolves the issue. Extra hardware can sometimes cause conflicts during bootup.

Also I found two part numbers below. You can check whether your processor is matching or not.

6TDM3 SVC,PRC,E52470V2,2.4,25M,IVY
RR182 PRC,E52470V2,2.4,25M,IVY,M1

Hope that helps!

Hi @DELL-Erman O,

  1. BIOS Update: Check if there’s a BIOS update available. Updating the BIOS can often resolve compatibility issues with newer CPUs.

BIOS and iDRAC are up to date, iDRAC is version 2.65.65.65 and BIOS is 2.9.0, I don't see anything on the dell website that is higher versions of either of these for the T320.

Also I found two part numbers below. You can check whether your processor is matching or not.

The part number on my CPU is SR19S, is it only the 2 part numbers you've listed that are supported?

Ive reset the BIOS to see if that was causing issues and we did get a bit further after I did that but it still froze at the following lines:

and the same f1/f2 error:

hmm... I can't see this SR19S part number on our database. I always suggest flea power drain every part upgraded. If you had dissembled the DIMMs ensure they seated well in their slots. Then also you can do NVRAM_CLR via jumpers.

I would populate the old processor to see the motherboard or new processor caused the issue.

@DELL-Erman O I switched back to the old processor, it works fine... Can you tell me how I can check the part number? I assumed it was this part here:

but it appears that is not the case.

I could try and buy another cpu (maybe this one is defective?), but first Id like to know how I can check the part number to make sure I get one in your database

Hello,

That is good to see it will boot normally with the original processor.

Seeing the error:

Alert! System fatal error during previous boot

Core-Mid Level Error

Cache and Core Box, Last Level Cache Error

Try disabling "Memory Mapped I/O above 4G" in F2- System Setup -> Integrated Devices

When upgrading parts I would always recommend to contact Sales.

They can take your service tag and your criteria and supply you options available for your system and a quote for parts.

These are Service Part numbers for the E5-2400 v2 product family. They don't come up on the web site. You would need to contact Sales and ask for the Spare Part department to get a quote.

Hi @DELL-Charles R,

I've set that BIOS setting to disabled as you suggested (first with the original cpu to make sure it didn't cause an issue) and I'm getting the same error.

Are there more detailed logs I can access somewhere? iDRAC only seems to have very basic logs and system events and without being able to boot the system I cant access anything that would be located in a file system.

While I contact sales for a quote on a new one, is there anything else I can try to get this to work?

Hello I think what you can do is, you can go back to the previous processor then check out the logs from idrac, because just because you change the CPUs, it doesn’t mean the previous logs will be gone.

try clearing the System Event Log (SEL). If there is an existing error message, it will continue to popup on every boot.

Hi everyone, thanks for trying to assist. In the end it was just a bad CPU. Bought another 2 of them just to make sure and one of those worked no problems. Not really sure what the problem was at the end of the day, but its working now with one of the 2470s I bought so thats good enough for me.
