Dell Poweredge R730/R730xd Resizable BAR Support?

just wondering if these machines will ever support this option because I see that this server officially support a nvidia tesla m40 but not sure about the 24GB version of this gpu and apparently some research says that this gpu needs this feature so it can be mapped correctly within the uefi bios, im sure the 12gb version could work but not sure about this either as i dont have a 12gb version of this card or wha have you plus i strongly doubt that these machines are too old to support resizable bar.

Hello,

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R730 and R730xd servers do not support Resizable BAR (Base Address Register) technology.

The R730 and R730xd servers are part of the 13th generation PowerEdge server lineup and are based on Intel's Haswell architecture. Resizable BAR technology was introduced with the subsequent generation of servers, starting with the 14th generation PowerEdge servers based on Intel's Skylake architecture.

Therefore, if you are specifically looking for Resizable BAR support, you would need to consider newer PowerEdge server models, such as the R740 or R740xd, which are part of the 14th generation or later

@DELL-Charles R Okay, I was asking initially because i wanted to know at all if it was possible to use a Tesla M40 or P40 24GB models with these servers, I'd presume so since I've seen people use R720s with the mentioned GPU models, please advise.

Hello,

Both the R730 and R730xd support those GPU:

M40

Part #:MY6DR

Part Desc.:CRD,GRPHC,24GB,250W,M40,P,FF2

Nvidia M40?Passive, 24 GB, Dual Ports, 250W

P40

Part #:KM3C2

Part Desc.:CRD,GRPHC,24GB,250W,P40,P,FF3

Graphics Card, Nvidia Tesla P40 Passive, PCIe, 24 GB, Dual Ports, (250W)

I recommend to contact Sales to get a quote. There looks like it should also get a GPU Enablement Kit but I cannot find that part number or the components included in it.

@DELL-Charles R I don't think I need to contact sales for something I already have, could it be that the cards needed to be flashed with Dell firmware or something? because these GPUs are running the stock NVIDIA firmware, that would be confusing though because I've got 3 Tesla P4's running and they work like a charm with no extra setup, still kinda stumped that a 24GB model would run and on paper it seems like it should just be a plug & play experience.

Hi,

I tried to look for any documentation that needs any Dell GPU firmware to be installed to be able to use the GPU on PowerEdge R730/R730XD. Are you facing any error or issue? Or you are just looking for information. Tesla P4 are relatively 75W GPU that is in R730 user guide stated requirement power, but P40 is 250W. I would say it's more about what Charles mentioned, GPU enablement kit, which includes the power cable, which we don't have any information on.

@DELL-Joey C Hey,

I'm not too sure what else besides the power cable and the GPU itself that I would need, I used a K80 before in the system and it registered within VMs fine. To answer your question though I am genuinely having trouble with the server and the GPU, I do have two of the exact same machines and of the P40's and M40's but they don't like working within the operating systems I mentioned before with their corresponding drivers from NVIDIA.

Is the GPU enablement kit something that is absolutely required to get these GPUs to function correctly?

Hi,

According to the user guide, GPU enablement kit seems to be only at hardware level only, cables, CPU heatsink and shroud. What is the issue you are facing?

The only writing about GPU I can find is this only: https://dell.to/3zuIVc8. Though this paper is on R740, but further down some pages, it does state the support capability. Maybe this can help some finding on your issue?
