T620 PSU troubleshooting advice needed

I have a T620 which originally had two L1100E-S0 (LiteOn) PSUs, both PN: GYH9V. When one of these failed, I ran it on just the other one, until that also failed. Neither light green when plugged in.

I bought replacement PSUs (refurbished) which are E1100E-S0 (Emerson/Artesyn), PN: GDPF3 & YT39Y. Based on information from the seller, information on Dell driver firmware and information on posts in this community, I believe the new PSUs are compatible with the T620.

The new PSUs light green when power is connected, but the server does nothing when the power button is pressed. The fans don't even start. The only sign of power within the server is a green light (LED10) on the MOBO.

The PSUs have some physical differences, the most notable of which is that the connectors on the large tab span different numbers of pins, as shown in the photo below. The new PSUs (left and centre) have 2 connectors on the top (and 3 on the bottom) whereas the original has 5 on the top (and 5 on the bottom). Should I be concerned about this, given all the online info states they are compatible?

If the new PSUs are working properly and are compatible with the T620, then there must be something else at fault. I don't have the luxury of having spares I can swap in to test for the problem. Does anyone know what is likely to be damaged by a PSU failure, or what steps I can take to test what the problem part is without having replacements?

Thanks in advance, Ian

Both PSU (GDPF3 & YT39Y) are supported of T620. Did you tried powering on with only one PSU installed? Can you check whether iDRAC and LCD is functioning after installing new PSU?

Thanks Shine K,

I've tried the PSUs separately and together, with the same result. There is no visible or audible sign that the server has power apart from the LED on the MOBO (and the light on the PSU). The LCD display doesn't light up, the power button doesn't illuminate and there are no clicks from relays or anything like that when the power button is pressed.

I don't have an iDRAC license. The server was originally supplied by my then employer to use to work from home, and I inherited it (without any software or licenses) when I retired.

I've removed the hard drives, but that made no difference. There's no sign it starts POST so I find it hard to believe pulling out other hardware will help.

Thanks, Ian

Hi, like Shines said you need to check idrac for hardware issue. idrac "express" for T620 is free. https://dell.to/39fR0ED

Thanks Young E,

I tried resetting iDRAC using both the rear and front system identification buttons, but nothing happens. In my case, the buttons aren't lit (and neither is the power button or the LCD panel) so it seems to me that the iDRAC itself has no power (and neither does the control panel). I also tried connecting the server to a laptop via the iDRAC port, but there's no sign that it's doing anything. Apart from the green LED10 on the MOBO, there is no sign of power anywhere beyond the PSU itself.

Is it possible to check if the power distribution board is working using a meter?

Thanks, Ian

Hi you can check votage through idrac, That's what the idrac is for. ^^

Hi Young E,

My understanding is that you have to connect the server to another computer/device to get any information from iDRAC, at least when the server won't turn on. As I said in my post, I can't make that connection, so how do I get any information at all from iDRAC?

Thanks, Ian

Hello,

yes you are right, iDRAC is accessible only via network, or from the server itself if the server is running.

But for troubleshooting and to see if motherboard complete post, try to do the following:

- remove all memory

- start the server

If the server is beeping that it means that POST is completed.

If the server doesn't complete the post, it means that it could be an issue with the Power Distribution Board or the Motherboard itself.

I hope it helps

Thanks
Marco

Thanks Marco,

There was no change when I removed all the memory. I don't think POST even starts because there's no sign of life in the control panel, and the power button seems to do nothing at all.

In any case, I reduced the system to the "Minimum to POST" config of MOBO, single CPU, single DIMM, PB, single PSU and control panel (both with and without the LCD connected) and I still get nothing. I checked (with a meter) that there is 12V DC to both PWR_CONN_1 & PWR_CONN_2 on the MOBO, and that is ok. Interestingly, if PWR_CONN_2 is disconnected, then LED10 (12VAUX) no longer lights (as expected) but the fan on the PSU turns on (otherwise the PSU fan remains off).

My unfortunate conclusion is that it's likely the MOBO that's the problem. Please let me know if anyone has any other ideas.

Cheers, Ian

If you can't access idrac, yes unfortunately, I'm suspecting the same.
