Oracle Standard Edition, RAC & VPLEX
Hello,
My understanding is that the Standard Edition can be used with the Oracle RAC module (from the 10g) to build a RAC with 2 nodes.
My questions are:
- Beside the Oracle RAC module & Oracle ClusterWare, in order to implement an Oracle RAC with the Standard Edition (SE), some other Oracle modules/options are needed?
- What is latency supported by Oracle between RAC’s nodes.
- Is anybody aware of particular caveats of implementing Oracle RAC with the SE and VPLEX?
Thank you very much for your answer,
Agostino

See comments inline below to your questions:
Oracle RAC on SE is a matter of marketing and licensing, not a matter of modules / options. In order to run Oracle SE with RAC, you must meet the processor limitation for that version. That's it. Thus, implementation of Oracle RAC on SE is identical to EE, other than licensing.
A max of 2 ms is recommended but a max of 5 ms is supported.
The main caveat would be the distance / latency relationship. Generally, latency of 1 ms can be supported with a distance of 100 km, but this is very much a YMMV situation. It depends upon the number of devices, how the signal is routed, etc. Also, remember that the VPLEX Witness product is not optional for Oracle RAC, and that it must be located at a third site. This document (http://www.emc.com/collateral/software/white-papers/h8930-vplex-metro-oracle-rac-wp.pdf) contains the detail you are looking for.

Oracle Standard Edition licensing is restricted to servers that have a maximum capacity of 4 sockets.
That could mean 4 x 1 socket servers or 2 x 2 socket servers or some other combination which means the 4 sockets limit is not exceeded. The number of cores per CPU is not restricted.
To deploy RAC on Oracle SE,
When deciding to deploy Oracle SE vs Oracle Enterprise , as well as cost, one should be aware of the features available with each edition. Here is a good starting point.

Oracle limit extended RAC to < 100km - which is ~ 1ms but would needs to be tested by each client.
To look at the specific requirements for deploying Oracle RAC on VPLEX you should start here and study the whitepapers that are linked.
