Where is the PCIe x1 slot for dell optiplex 790 SFF

I have a optiplex 790 SFF and I want to install a PCIe-based WiFi adapter but I don't found the PCIe x1 slot.

You know how there's always a notch in the card connection?  Line it up with the notch of the PCIe slot.  If you try it, it won't break anything.  It would be a problem, or more of a problem, to do the reverse.  Plug x16 device into x8 slot for example.  That would have its limitations.

I haven't heard of wifi card problems with the 790 yet if that helps.

@bradthetechnut is spot on with that advice. The link here at YourPCGuider has more information as does the page here at TechReviewer. However depending on the make and model of some Wi-Fi adapters, certain adapters only work on a x1 slot as the following note from ASUS, for example, states:

"PCE-AC58BT and PCE-AX58BT are designed in accordance with PCI Express x1 (1 lane) standard. Please install PCE-AC58BT/PCE-AX58BT into PCIe x1 slot on the motherboard in order to ensure the functionality of the wireless card."

So before you purchase an adapter check the manufacturer's web site to make sure the card will work in other PCIe slots. Usually the manual for the adapter has those specs.

Should be able to use a slot that's not in use.  Card with smaller connection can still go into a larger slot.

Do you mean that could I use a PCIe x16 as PCIe x1 and it works? could I get an example how to do this?

@stevenbdl30 - Another idea if you want is to use a USB wifi dongle.  Like some PCIe cards, some wifi dongles have wifi and Bluetooth.
