Optiplex 7040 not outputting image

Hi. I bought a refurbished Optiplex 7040. I connected it to a monitor through HDMI, started it, but the monitor shows nothing. The computer boots because I hear the windows welcome tune. I suspect it's output image through the display port. How do I force it to output through HDMI?

When pc is working properly it does not have option to selectively send video to one but not the other integrated video port. It does not have an option to send video to DP only and not HDMI.  Normally video is automatically send to both ports.

@redxps630 The computer has an HDMI port.

I meant to say: it's outputting* image through display port (it has both DP and HDMI). I have no means to test the DP.

you are right.  with model like this try replace cmos battery w a new one then clear cmos settings via motherboard jumper.  when it is working normally it would send video to both DP and HDMI ports

@redxps630 what am I supposed to do? Replace the battery. Close the jumper, and turn it on? Then, if it works, do I turn off the computer, open the jumper, and leave it like that? Thanks.

Replace battery in 7040 is recommended as the pc is 8-9 years old.

power off pc, open case, CLR CMOS jumper is set for 5 sec then put back on password jumper pin. After you are done close case panel and power it on.

@redxps630 Ah, so I don't need to turn on the computer for the CLR CMOS short to take effect then? Ok. Great.

No you don’t need to power on to clear cmos. The Dell online instruction is incorrect.

This is what I see. The jumper has RTCRST, PWCLR, and SERVICE MODE. I imagine the first one is the real time clock reset and that's the one I have to short for 5 secs?

Also, while I am at it. What kind of SSD is this so I can order one of the same type? I want to install Ubuntu, and this has Windows installed. I was going to just erase Windows, but I decided to keep it.

@redxps630 Ok. So I reset the RTC and it doesn't work.

Will a DP to HDMI converter work for this? Perhaps the HDMI port doesn't work, but the DP does? I know it's not the best solution, but if it works, at least I'll get video and I'll be able to diagnose what's going on... Right now, the computer is a very expensive brick.

It is not recommended to use DP to hdmi adapter. You have a 7040 Micro PC.

When pc works, power button is supposed to be blue or white.  can you send a pic of the back side of your pc?

test your monitor and hdmi cable using another pc to confirm both work properly. Double check hdmi cable connection on both ends.

@redxps630 The first time I started it, it loaded windows because I could hear the windows music. At some point, while it was on, I pulled the computer and the DC cable was flimsy and it fell turning off the computer. Ever since, I can't hear the music, so I guess it's stuck on a "windows didn't shut down correctly the last time", but there's no way for me to know.

Here's the picture:

Ok. Try uninstall the ssd from the pc. You need a small screwdriver to loosen a M2 screw that holds the ssd down.  After the ssd is removed, try test post again.  Have you confirmed that the monitor and hdmi both work and have you double checked hdmi cable is securely plugged in at both ends?  You can try a different hdmi cable too.  If the power button is blue or white, the pc is working despite no hdmi video out.
