Re: Help! Slow Internet: Wireless 1520 Wireless N

Just in case anyone still has an issue with DW1520 in 2023, here's my experience.
I have a Dell Precision M4500 with the Dell DW1520 wireless N adapter. My wifi speed has been only 25mbps down/37mbps up no matter what i've tried till now - all the adapter advanced settings, trying to update DW1520 drivers on dell.com website. Out of desperstion, I tried something different. Upon updating adapter driver, I went to "browse my computer for drivers/"let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer/, then uncheck the "show compatibe hardware", then select the Dell Wireless 1510 Wireless-N-WLAN Mini-Card (Broadcom). After this "unsupported" driver update, my speeds increased to 170/160 mbps range. I have a 200/200 internet service. Unsupported, unexpected, but it works. YMMV.

@Slow wifi I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing slow internet speeds with your Dell DW1520 wireless N adapter. Slow internet can be caused by various factors, so it's important to troubleshoot and narrow down the possible causes. Here are some steps you can try:

  1. Check other devices: Test the internet speed on other devices connected to the same network. If they are also experiencing slow speeds, the issue might be with your internet service provider (ISP) or the router.

  2. Restart your router: Sometimes, restarting your router can help resolve connectivity issues. Simply unplug the power cord, wait for a few seconds, and then plug it back in. Give the router a few minutes to reconnect and make a speed test via Speedtest.net.

  3. Move closer to the router: If you're far away from the router, the signal strength may be weak, leading to slower speeds. Try moving closer to the router to see if the signal improves.

  4. Update firmware and drivers: Ensure that both your router and the DW1520 wireless adapter have the latest firmware and drivers installed. Check Dell's support website for any available updates for your adapter.

  5. Adjust wireless settings: Access your router's settings and try changing the wireless channel. Interference from other devices or neighboring networks can affect the signal quality. Experiment with different channels to find the one with the least interference.

  6. Check for signal interference: Electronic devices such as cordless phones, baby monitors, or microwave ovens can interfere with Wi-Fi signals. Keep these devices away from your router or adapter, if possible.

  7. Reset network settings: On your Dell Precision M4500, you can try resetting the network settings. Open the Network and Sharing Center, click on "Change adapter settings," right-click on your wireless adapter, and select "Disable." After a few seconds, right-click again and choose "Enable."

  8. Contact your ISP: If you've tried the above steps and are still experiencing slow speeds, reach out to your internet service provider. They can perform additional tests and troubleshoot the issue further.

Keep in mind that wireless N technology is relatively older, and you may not achieve the same speeds as with newer Wi-Fi standards. Upgrading to a more modern adapter, such as wireless AC or Wi-Fi 6, may provide faster speeds if your router supports these standards.

I hope these suggestions help improve your internet speed.
