Precision 5560, Dell docks cause issues with VPN

Precision 5560

Precision 5560

Hello, I have the a Precision 5560 and a Dell WD22TB4/WD19TBS Dock. With the computer powered off, it gets connected to the docking station, user can log in fine, access the internet normally.

The issue is when the user connects his VPN, set up using the built in windows 10 VPN client. The VPN will connect, but will not allow him to access anything on the network inside the VPN. This has been resolved by rebooting 1-3 times.

When not connected to the docking station, the laptop can connect to the VPN via wifi and have no issues. The docking station has been updated to the latest firmware available via the Dell Update app.

Any suggestions?

 mfinn-suurv,

To receive assistance from Dell support, they need to verify the warranty status and ownership. Click the "Get help now" icon on the right to start a live chat session. Provide to them the private Service Tag and all of your troubleshooting.

All steps have been performed, aside from a different VPN client. The only one we can use is the built in Windows VPN client.

I have updated the docking station to the latest firmware available.

Thinking about re-imaging the laptop.

I will update with my findings.

Curious if you had any luck with this? I'm seeing a similar situation here recently.

My work supplied laptop is a Latitude 5431 with the WD19TBS docking station attached and seeing the same exact situation. Using the ethernet on the dock and connecting through the built in Windows (Windows 11 here) L2TP client to my employers endpoint and the connection just fails. Speed tests slow to a crawl and stuff either doesn't load or REALLY slowly to be unusable. No VPN and it works fine. And switching to the built in port on the laptop is fine with or without the VPN connected.

I'm just an employee and currently working with my IT department but we've both been putting in effort on this and are baffled. Wasn't until I decided to take a wild guess on trying the built in ethernet on the laptop that this became apparent.

Unfortunately, no. I ended up having to wipe and reinstall windows on the laptop to get the VPN to function properly. Its working normally after that.

Thanks. I appreciate the update. Sad you weren't able to find a solution other than wiping the machine. I think worst case I'll just live with the internal ethernet on this thing. It's not inconveniencing in any way (the laptop doesn't leave my desk and the dock is mostly for the extra display connections) and the rest of the dock works beautifully.

I just rather not have to go through my company's whole 'send out a loaner and return the primary laptop to reimage'. Already had to go through that cycle about 3 times earlier this year due to some unrelated issues. I think my local FedEx people know me by name now. lol.

@mfinn-suurv I just want to add a small update on my own situation here. My workplace recently migrated from using the built in VPN function in Windows to using the Cisco Anyconnect VPN client and knock on wood it has been behaving so far moving back to the ethernet port on the dock.
