Can’t download from any browser - Failed Virus scan

Please can someone help me!

For months now I’ve not been able to download anything from any search engine on my Laptop. I click download, the tape appears at the bottom with the file and I get Failed - Virus scan failed.

As far as I’m aware nothing changed on the laptop and it’s not used too often.

I’ve followed a few web step by step guides but nothing has resolved the issue. This is happening on Google Chrome and Microsoft edge which tells me it’s an issue with the laptop and not the browsers.

I recently tried all steps here to a T, but still, no change  https://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/how-to-fix-virus-scan-failed-in-google-chrome/amp/

Would anyone be so kind as to help me?

The "Virus scan failed" error might be due to a conflict between your antivirus software and the browser or a corrupted system file. Try the following steps to resolve the issue:

1. Temporarily disable your antivirus software and try downloading a file. If it works, add an exception for the browser in the antivirus settings, then re-enable the antivirus.

2. Run a full antivirus scan to ensure there is no malware causing the issue.

3. Update your antivirus software and browsers to their latest versions.

4. Reset your browser settings to default:
- For Chrome: Go to Settings > Advanced > Reset and clean up > Restore settings to their original defaults.
- For Edge: Go to Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values.

5. Run System File Checker:
- Press Windows key + X, click on Command Prompt (Admin), and type "sfc /scannow" (without quotes). Press Enter and wait for the process to complete.
