Bluetooth dongle icon disappears

I have an "old" [at least 7 years olod] Inspiron 3000 with no Bluetooth board.  I bought a TP-Link 400 Bluetooth dongle and all seemed OK upon installation BUT now the Bluetooth icon has disappeared from the right-side of the Taskbar and I can not receive files from my mobile - I have read all the posts BUT they seem to involve an on-board card, which I do NOT have - can anyone help?
