MLAG Peer Switch locks up

Hello,

We have two Dell N4000 series switches that are connected with a 10GB link for the MLAG Peer Network. When we turn on MLAG I lose connectivity to the one switch. I turn off MLAG and it comes back without any issues. I am trying to figure out why the switch drops offline when I turn on MLAG. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hello thanks for choosing Dell. Please go through this material

to check the misconfiguration issues on the switches.

If your switch is still in warrenty, sending the switch logs to the tech support helps as well.  https://dell.to/41ReMME

Hi,

If you are experiencing connectivity issues when enabling MLAG (Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation) on your Dell N4000 series switches, there could be several factors contributing to the problem. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Verify MLAG configuration: Double-check the configuration on both switches to ensure that MLAG is properly set up. Make sure that both switches have the same MLAG configuration, including the same domain ID, the same peer link settings, and consistent VLAN assignments.

  2. Check cable and link connectivity: Ensure that the 10GB link between the switches is properly connected and functional. Verify that the cables are securely plugged in and that there are no physical issues with the link. You can try swapping the cables or using different ports to rule out any potential hardware problems.

  3. Review switch logs: Check the switch logs on both switches for any error messages or warnings related to MLAG or network connectivity. The logs may provide valuable information about the cause of the connectivity loss.

  4. Firmware and software versions: Ensure that both switches are running the latest firmware and software versions recommended by Dell. Outdated firmware or software can sometimes cause compatibility issues or bugs that may impact MLAG functionality.

  5. Seek vendor support: If the issue persists, it is advisable to contact Dell's technical support for further assistance. They can provide more in-depth troubleshooting steps and help you resolve the problem specific to your switch model and configuration.

Remember to provide detailed information about your network setup, the steps you have already taken, and any error messages you have encountered when reaching out to technical support. This will help them better understand your situation and provide more targeted assistance.

I hope these suggestions help you in resolving the MLAG connectivity issue. Good luck, and let me know  if you have any further questions!

Hello,

Thank you for your assistance. I was reviewing only version 1.5 of the white paper. However version 1.1 contains information that was not included in version 1.5. The issue was Spanning Tree was turned on. Once I turned it off for the interfaces for the MLAG Peer Group it worked. Hopefully this will help someone else.

Thanks,
