U2913WM, DP MST daisy chain to HDMI not working

I have Dell G15 5520 with RTX 3060 with USB-C/DisplayPort alt-mode output.

I have Dell U2913WM with DP in and DP out ports.

I have a generic HDMI only monitor.

Before buying the Dell U2913WM monitor, I researched online that I can use DisplayPort MST to daisy chain multiple monitors. I verified that RTX 3060 has DisplayPort 1.4. I verified that the Dell monitor has DisplayPort 1.2 (yes, I've enabled it in monitor OSD). I've also researched that the last link/monitor in the chain can be a regular HDMI monitor.

My connections are:

  • Laptop USB-C/DP port -> 8K-USB-C to full DP cable -> DP in port on Dell U2913WM
  • Dell U2913WM DP out port -> 4K-DP to HDMI cable -> HDMI in port on generic monitor

This doesn't work. I get the signal on the Dell monitor, but nothing down the chain. I've turned on and off DP 1.2 support on the monitor multiple times. I've changed the down chain DP-HDMI cable. I've even reset monitor to factory settings. Nothing.

What's wrong here? It's supposed to work.

I've got a random one off reply from someone elsewhere saying that some DP MST chains don't support HDMI as the last link, but it's not documented anywhere. I don't get it. Wouldn't output on DP out port work regardless if the output cable is DP-DP or DP-HDMI?

"I researched online that I can use DisplayPort MST to daisy chain multiple monitors."
"I've also researched that the last link/monitor in the chain can be a regular HDMI monitor."
"It's supposed to work."

I do not see in the online U2913WM User's Guide  that DP MST daisy chain works with last monitor using an HDMI in port.

It shows second monitor using DP in =

It was regarding DP MST protocol in general, that it can support HDMI as the last chain link. Sorry, I didn't see that line in monitor-specific manual.

So that's it then? An HDMI monitor as the last-link is just not supported by this Dell Monitor?

Would it work if I bought an MST Hub instead?

Thank you

I am not aware of any stand alone MST hubs? Do you mean a docking station? Most of them do not support MST daisy chaining. But most have multiple video out ports to run multiple monitors. But why spend more money? Why not setup like this =

G15 5520 USB-C/DP port -> 8K-USB-C to full DP cable -> U2913WM DP in port
G15 5520 HDMI out --> HDMI to HDMI cable --> U2913WM HDMI in port

The hub is something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08Y7FSSKM. Maybe I shouldn't have called it a "hub", but that's what others called it online.

As for "why?" 2 reasons:

  • Leaves me ability to connect 3 or more monitors in the future
  • More importantly, the USB-C/DP port is supposed to be driven by the discrete 3060 GPU (better performance, etc), whereas the HDMI is driven by the onboard Intel Iris.... Unfortunately, it seems I can't even get that right, cause in my case this is completely reversed

Thank you for your time @DELL-Chris M

In your other thread, should one of these be marked as On?

With Optimus turned off in BIOS

  • Internal Display -> RTX
  • HDMI output -> RTX
  • USB-C/DP output -> Iris

Oops, gonna go fix that, thanks!

Should be:

  • Internal Display -> Iris
  • HDMI output -> RTX
  • USB-C/DP output -> Iris
