P2419H, No VGA signal from your device

Hello,

I have a new Dell monitor P2419H. I tried to use it as an extended monitor for my laptop.

Connected Laptop to the P2419H monitor via VGA cable and selected the input signal source on the monitor as VGA, however it displays on the monitor "No VGA signal from your device." Contacted Dell support last week, and they shipped a replacement monitor, however the replacement monitor has the same behavior.

I can confirm the VGA cable is good. Just wondering if there is a bug for the Dell monitor P2419H that it cannot display via VGA cable connection?

Thanks.

The laptop is a 2017 HP Probook 450 G3. Yes, it is basic VGA cable connection instead of display port connection.

Thanks.

@studyapple  I doubt there's a bug across all P2419H displays that prevents their VGA inputs from working if that model has a VGA input.  What laptop model are using, and is this just a basic VGA cable rather than something like a DisplayPort to VGA cable or HDMI to VGA cable?  Lastly, I see that you've tested the VGA cable elsewhere, so you've isolated that variable, but have you tested this display's VGA input from any other laptop, or tested your laptop with any other VGA display?  Those would be the next important variables to isolate.

Or depending on the laptop you have, do you have any other display output connectors, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C?  If so, any of those could be used to connect to the P2419H (USB-C would require something like a USB-C to DisplayPort cable and a laptop that supported video output over USB-C), and using any of those would look noticeably better than ancient VGA, because VGA is an analog signal whereas all other options are digital.

Thanks for the message.

The issue with the Dell monitor P2419H is the VGA port doesn't work properly.

1. Tried to connect the monitor via HDMI port to Mac laptop USB-C port (no VGA port on Mac), it can display.

2. The HP laptop doesn't have a USB-C port. I tried to connect it via VGA cable to the Dell monitor. However it says "No VGA signal from your device."

Thanks

@studyapple  interesting finding.  In that case I'm not sure what to tell you.  Maybe a bad batch of products made it out of a factory or something?  But I don't think it would make sense to assume that there's a known issue with the P2419H in general that causes its VGA input not to work, since after all in that case, why even have it on the display at all?

Also, I didn't realize there were VGA to HDMI adapters that allowed you to use a VGA source to feed an HDMI display input.  I've only ever seen VGA to HDMI adapters that are designed to support the opposite scenario (HDMI source device into VGA display).

@jphughan

I bought the following items today in order to troubleshoot the Dell monitor issue found on Dell P2419H:

  1. HDMI cable (with HDMI connectors on both ends)
  2. VGA to HDMI adapter
Then setup the connection like this:

HP laptop -> VGA to HDMI adapter -> HDMI cable -> Dell P2419H monitor

Result: Dell P2419H monitor can display

so, this again confirms the VGA port on my HP laptop works fine.

Probably there is a bug for the Dell P2419H product that it won't work with VGA connection...
