Latest S2340T DisplayLink Drivers

Hello:

When I set up my S2340T Dell monitor, I installed the DISPLAYLINK drivers (version 7.0) off the driver CD provided by Dell. I noticed there were updated drivers (7.11) out in February and tried to install them. Installation on my Dell Inspiron 660 with Win8 and Intel HD card (purchased in Jan) led to problems with the desktop failing to shut down (unexpected shutdown problem), failing to restart (driver-power-state-failure) and the touch feature failing after the machine starts back up from an inactivity power down until the machine is restarted. The new drivers did resolve my problem with S2340T audio. Have subsequently gone back to original drivers. Any comments?

Hi Cliff,

Display Link software interacts closely with the primary graphics card. There could be a possibility that the display link software is conflicting with the video driver. will recommend you to uninstall the display link 7.0 and 7.1 drivers from your system and also uninstall Intel driver:

  • Press windows key + X on the keyboard and click on 'Programs and features'.
  • Uninstall Intel and display link drivers (7.0 and 7.1 both)
  • Once done, close 'Programs and features' and press windows key + x again.
  • Click on 'Device Manager'.
  • Expand 'Display adapters' and right click on the Intel driver and click on 'uninstall'.

Restart the system and install latest Intel driver. Here is the link:  http://dell.to/ZEL5ck
Restart the system after the video driver installation and try installing the latest display link driver and let me know if it works. Here is the link for the latest display link driver:  http://bit.ly/14PXX14

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Hi Vikram:

The Intel HD Graphics driver release is currently 9.17.10.2849 (according to Device Manager) which was released on 10/23/2012. The one you are suggesting I use is release 9.17.10.2817 (a lower number) which was released on 10/22/2012 (is older). I'm not familiar with release numbering of drivers including A00 A01 etc but this seems suspicious. Note I'm running Win8 64 bit and have already removed 711 drivers on going back to 70 drivers (DisplayLink Core Software and Dell DisplayLink Software whatever that is)),

Hi Cliff,

Thank you for the reply. I understand that the video driver installed on your system is the latest one, however, I request you to install the video driver from the above post as it has been tested on your system and is available on our support site. Please uninstall the video driver and Display link software. Once done, re-install the video driver and then install the latest version of Display Link software.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Hi Vikram:

I followed your procedure but unfortunately found the operating system (?) was automatically re-applying the 9.17.10.2849 driver right after I finished removing it. I subsequently tried disconnecting my network cable and re-deleting 2849 and re-installing 2817 and then it stuck around. Subsequent testing initially led to shutdown failures and the failure of the machine to go down into standbye mode due to inactivity. After a while this seemed to clear up for some reason and those features started working. When I plugged my cable back in, 2849 came back and I had an immediate problem with restarting the PC. At one point after I installed the new DisplayLink, it put out a message complaining about an incompatible graphics driver but I'm not sure this was due to 2817 or the unexpected changebackover to 2849 that occurred.

Testing would be more clear I think if the driver didn't keep re-installing itself!

Hi Cliff,

It appears that the computer is installing the driver through windows updates. For troubleshooting purpose, you can disable the windows updates. Follow the steps below :

  • Press 'Windows' + 'X' on keyboard and click on 'Control Panel'
  • Click on 'System and Security'
  • Under 'Windows Updates', click 'Turn Windows updates on or off'
  • Under 'Important Updates', change the settings to 'Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them'
  • Click on 'OK' to save the settings.

Now try uninstalling the driver and install the one from the support site and also update the display link software and let me know the status.

Hope this helps. Do reply with the findings.

Hi Vikram:

Managed to figure out how to stop driver automatic updates and tested 2817 with the lastest DisplayLink drivers. Still had intermittent shutdown failure and refusal-to-go-into-standbye-mode-on-inactivity problems with 2817 in.

Hi Cliff,

Thank you for the reply. I will recommend you to uninstall the video driver again and run Intel Driver update utility and see if that makes a difference. Here is the link: http://intel.ly/m7tqmV

In case the issue still persists, you can take your system back to it's factory state. There are two ways to restore Windows 8 to factory settings. They are “Refresh” and “Reset”.

Refresh: The Refresh option is primarily a repair method. It is a great method of returning your PC to a known good state while preserving your files and a great deal of your configuration. With the Refresh your PC option, user accounts, data files, and some settings are preserved on your PC without the need to create a backup, or to make choices about what to keep or remove.

Reset: This is similar to a PC restore. This option, also called Reset your PC is useful when a PC is changing hands, or when you want to get a completely fresh start on a PC, with no previous files or configuration retained.

To Refresh Windows 8 please follow the below mentioned steps:

Note: This will delete all your data stored.

  1. Open the General section of PC Settings by the key combination WIN KEY + C to open charms bar and click PC Settings.

  2. Click the Get started button under Refresh your PC without affecting your files.

  3. Click the Next button at the Refresh your PC step of the wizard.

  4. You may be prompted to insert installation or recovery media if there is not a recovery image preconfigured on your PC.

  5. Click the Refresh button at the Ready to refresh your PC step.

  6. At this point, the PC is restarted, and the refresh actions are completed.

To Reset the Windows 8 to factory settings please follow the below mentioned steps:

(Note: Reset option will delete the data from the computer)

  1. Open the General section of PC settings by the key combination WIN Key + C to open Charms bar and click PC settings.

  2. Click the Get started button under Remove Everything and reinstall windows and start over.

  3. Click the Next button at the Reset your PC and start over step of the wizard.

  4. As in the Reset steps, you may be prompted to insert Windows 8 installation or recovery media if there is not a recovery image preconfigured on your PC.

  5. If you have multiple drives on your PC, the next step gives you a choice of how you want files removed. You can remove files from the Windows drive only, or from all drives.

  6. Next you will be asked if you want to fully clean your drive. You can choose to just remove my files or a more complete removal with the Fully clean the drive option. Neither option provides a guarantee that the data will be unrecoverable, but the fully clean option will make it significantly more difficult.

  7. To proceed, click the Reset button at the Ready to reset your PC step, shown below.

  8. At this point the PC is restarted into a full-screen progress screen.

  9. The next step on a PC where the Pro Pack or Media Pack was installed is shown below. In these scenarios you will need to enter your Product Key. Notice that there is a Skip button here. This would enable you to complete the Reset without entering your key. That can be useful if you are selling a PC and want to retain a retail Windows 8 license that you installed on it.

  10. The final step is the License Terms. Click Accept in this step to complete the reset.

Please reply for any further questions.

Hi Vikram:

Thank you for the suggestions but I think I am done experimenting with my PC (too much chance of causing permanent harm!). The idea of a refresh or reset also seems highly extreme to me especially since these DisplayLink drivers in their original version were not 100% functioning from the day I got the PC. I think I will just wait for a future and hopefully better release from DayLink.

Hi Cliff,

I understand that the idea of refresh or reset may sound quite extreme, however, the intent of giving this step was only to eliminate the software/OS related issues. Refresh and Reset are very common troubleshooting steps and should not cause any harm or permanent damage to the computer.

I did some research on the issues and i found that the displaylink do have some known issues with USB 3.0 controller. You may refer to the link :http://bit.ly/13746eb

So, I would like to know if you are connecting the monitor via USB 3.0 or 2.0. On the rear of system tower, you will find 4 blue USB 3.0 ports and 2 black USB 2.0 ports.

Do reply with the findings so that I can help you in finding a best possible resolution for this issue.

Hi Vikram:

Thanks for the info. Yes... I noticed the disclaimer about USB 3.0 in the user guide associated with the 711 DisplayLink patch and I am using USB 3.0. The patch for Intel USB referenced does not indicate support for Windows 8 though and  I did not try it. Can one connect a USB 2.0 socket on the desktop to a USB 3.0 socket on the monitor (and they are all 3.0)?

Note that a number of people have contacted DisplayLink via their forum about problems with the S2340T and DisplayLink drivers and Windows 8 but the problems reported seem to be mostly about video issues and failing Windows 8 apps like "Netflix" and nothing like the shutdown/restart/standbye problems I'm having. I have asked one of the forum participants who's having video problems to provide more info to me on his situation but he hasn't replied to far. (One reviewer of the monitor on Amazon said he loved the monitor but advised that one shouldn't install the DisplayLink drivers at all inferring they didn't work with Win8 and weren't necessary!)

I did run the diagnostic tool provided by DisplayLink on my PC. It does some basic checks (all of which my PC passed) and has an option to create a zip file of diagnostic material (which I ran twice - after the shutdown and standbye problems). I may try submitting said files to the DisplayLink forum.

I discovered the S2340T setup demo video at last night. It indicates that I should be using USB source mode for the S2340T and I was using HDMI source mode. Using USB source is what the install doc on the drivers CD that came with the monitor indicated but I couldn't see how to make it work. All I saw was a taskbar and no icons on the desktop. The video showed that one had to access DEVICES in the Win 8 charms to get the display to work (I also had to unplug the HDMI cable after that). At least I think I have things working as intended now: the DELL logo on desktop boot up has disappeared since I went to USB source mode. (It's lucky I am retired and have plenty of time on my hands to fool around with these issues!)

I believe Windows RESET means having to re-install all desktop apps while REFRESH loses some configuration associated with those apps. I don't feel REFRESH/RESET would be beneficial to this problem, not enough to consider dealing with these issues.

Hi Vikram:

Received a response from the fellow DisplayLink forum user with S2340T issues. I described my problems with the 71 release and asked what his configuration was. He/She replied:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

displaylink 7.1

dell xps 8500 i7 graphic AMD Radeon HD 7570 with dell s2340t monitor usb3 connection display; hdmi connect to 2nd monitor

had similar issues on install had to reinstall windows8 2 times until I figured out it was the displaylink software causing problem

dell tech support says it the software and windows 8 compatibility and keep looking for updates until problem fixed

Netflix hulu don't work with app;browser mode works

bing map app works fine on second monitor thru hdmi when app loads on dells 2340t usb3 connection not working properly, loads map but cant move map around with mouse touch screen

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It appears from what he is saying ("had similar issues" / "dell tech support says...") that he has reported similar problems to Dell and that Dell person said to wait for another DisplayLink(?) update.

Hi Cliff,

I am replying on behalf of DELL-Vikram M. You may connect the USB cable to USB 2.0 port on the computer as USB3.0 is backwards compatible. Also, as you are using the monitor with the USB display, you may disconnect the HDMI connection from the monitor and computer. You may follow the steps below to select the USB as the display source for monitor :

  • Use the 4th button from the top on the right side of monitor to display the Input Source menu

  • Use the 2nd button from top to Highlight the USB option
  • Use the 3rd button from top to select the USB as Input source
  • Update the Intel chipset drivers from the link : http://dell.to/WSOzM3 and Intel ME (Management Engine) drivers from the link : http://dell.to/118FpZD
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to update the drivers and restart the computer when prompted
  • Once the computer restarts update the monitor drivers from the link : http://dell.to/WUEiiD
  • Try re-installing the updated displaylink drivers from the link : http://bit.ly/45yyeQ

You may also refer to the User Manual of S2340T : http://bit.ly/ZZo30d and User Guide for display link driver : http://bit.ly/XoWETz for more information.

Hope this helps. Do reply with the findings.

Hello:

Thanks for the info. I have already successfully set up USB source mode for the monitor and subsequently decided to go back to HMDI mode as access to things like the Advanced Boot Menu are not there in USB mode i.e. you can't see what's happening when the machine is booting up until the Lock Screen appears (IF the boot was successful). I have read over the Dell and DisplayLink manuals already as well. I am already running the recommended release of Intel Management Engine (8.1.0.1263). The release of the Intel Chipset Drivers I have is 9.3.0.1020. You are recommending 9.3.0.1021 which at least release number wise does not appear to be much of a change. The monitor driver you recommend appears to be the first and only release of same (A00). Why would I not already be using it? (I don't know how to exactly determine the monitor driver release in Device Manager (->Monitors->Dell S2340T(HDMI) ?)). I am hesitant to do any further driver installs because if there are any problems that result, I need a backout procedure other then REFRESH/RESET.

As my last couple of notes indicated I would, I submitted DisplayLink diagnostic files of a couple of my problems to the DisplayLink Forum and I await a response from there. Numerous S2340T people are reporting problems with DisplayLink 71 on this forum. There appears to be a new DisplayLink drivers update coming according to one of the forum moderators. I may just wait for that if I don't get any response from DisplayLink on my diagnostics.

Note I am fully functional (at least for what I need) with the 70 DisplayLink drivers I am using, using USB 3.0.

Hi Cliff,

Your system is capable of picking up generic drivers for the monitor. The monitor driver which I shared earlier is specifically designed by Dell for your monitor and is always recommended to install it.

Also, we have performed almost all the troubleshooting steps so far and it appears as of now our best bet would be to wait for a stable release of driver from Display Link.

Do reply if you have any further questions. I would be glad to help you.

Hi Sundeep:

If you would explain how I can determine the release of the monitor driver I am using, I would consider installing any better version.
