How to connect a Dell E2216H to GPU with DVI and HDMI port?

The Dell E2216H has a VGA and DP port.

My graphics card (Geforce 1030) has a DVI and HDMI port.

I tried a DP to HDMI cable but it didnt work.

What other cables will work? VGA to HDMI? to DVI?

Which one would be better for gaming?
PC DVI to monitor VGA
or
PC HDMI to monitor VGA

* Go back to the top of this Monitors Forum
* Open the sticky, "FAQ Monitor"
* Open, "PC HDMI/DVI/VGA out to Monitor DP/mDP in"

PC DVI to monitor VGA would work
PC HDMI to monitor VGA would work

It might work. I prefer using straight conversion cables, no adapters.

@Laflame  Your best and simplest option is a DVI to VGA adapter plugged into your GPU's DVI output, plus a VGA cable.  The DVI port on your GPU supports sending a native VGA signal, so that is a passive adapter.  The HDMI port does not support VGA output, so you'd need an active adapter for that purpose, and active adapters as a result of being more complex can be less reliable, and more expensive.  And if you went that route, you'd also have to make sure you got one specifically meant to connect an HDMI source to a VGA display, since there are also adapters designed to go the opposite way, and they are not interchangeable.

That said, you'd still be using VGA, which is an ancient standard that uses an analog signal, so the signal quality wouldn't be as good as any other option, but you don't have great options with that combination of equipment.  The only way to use a digital signal would be to get an active HDMI to DisplayPort adapter specifically designed to enable an HDMI source to connect to a DisplayPort display.  Typical adapters only work the other way (DisplayPort source to HDMI input), which is why that didn't work for you.  But the adapter I'm describing is a bit expensive and requires a USB connection for power because it incorporates an active signal converter chip to switch the source's HDMI signal over to DisplayPort, since neither side end of the connection can do that on its own in that setup.

So I'd suggest starting with a simple, passive DVI to VGA adapter and seeing whether the image quality is acceptable to you.  If not, then you may want to consider the HDMI to DP active adapter I mentioned.  Or you might want to put that cash toward a better display, even a used one.
