USB Ports not working in Windows 10 after updating laptop (Vostro 1500)

I updated an old laptop, Dell Vostro 1500 from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Everything is great, the touch pad works, it is much faster than it used to be, only thing is, none of the 4 USB ports work.

I've gone to dell's website, all I get is an alert that says device is not compatible with Windows 10 and that everything is up to date. I haven't been able to find the specific drivers on intel's site and their program detects everything is also up to date

I googled and can't find anything other than sites like driver scape, which I know nothing about

Under device manager, there are 14 items under USB, there are 7 USB Family Universal Host Controller with numbers from 2830-2836A

And then there are 7 USB Root Hub with an error symbol. When I check properties I get "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (code 19)"

I've tried uninstalling and scanning for changes, that didnt work. I also tried CCleaner's registry fix

What are my options, is there any way to get USB ports to work on my laptop?

Thank You

Hi Benny,

Please see my previous reply to jtrand02 and check the link for the list of compatible systems.

Your system model is not compatible to work with W10. I would advise you to stay with W7/W8.1 unless you want to try your luck with W10.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Right click the start button and select system. Check the Windows Edition and see if Windows is activated?

If it is make a Bootable USB (Legacy MBR) using a computer which has working USB ports and Clean Reinstall:

Hi jtrand02,

The reason you might be facing this issue is that this model is not compatible to work with W10 - see this link - http://dell.to/1IwUU47  - Hence, Dell would not release any W10 drivers for this model. You could choose to perform a clean install of W10 via the link provided by Philip (in his post) - however, we cannot assure that W10 would be stable on your machine. In case you reinstall W10 - then download the W8.1/W7 drivers from Dell support site and install it in compatibility mode - see this link on how to - http://bit.ly/1Tixfax

I would suggest you to downgrade the system to W8.1/W7 for full system functionality - see this link on how to - http://bit.ly/1MeFV1d

Keep us updated.

Sadly no, I just reverted back to W7, which is a shame because W10 was a lot faster on my old machine

I came across this thread because I have a Dell Vostro 1500 that I have as a backup PC, for when I go on trips and such. I have had Windows 10 installed now for a couple months, with no major issues really. I came across this thread because maybe 1/5 times when I boot up my laptop, the usb ports will not work, sometimes I have to unplug the device and plug it back in, or just reboot the laptop.

But I'm basically just writing to say that yes, 4/5 times the usb ports do work with Windows 10. I don't see why they would not work to be honest, I would imagine windows 10 would be sophisticated enough to have some sort of universal driver to run something as simple as usb 2.0 ports.

I honestly have no idea either.  I got the USB to work like 1 time out of 5 or 6 resets.

Did you do a clean install?  I just installed over, perhaps I could do a clean install and wipe everything

My Latitude E7440 is on the list however my USB ports are not working properly.
It either says that they have malfunctioned or keeps on disconnecting and connecting.

Hi again,

I updated last month my DELL Vostro 1500 from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. It was a in place update. First I have problems with the usb post. After shut down and restart the usb ports do not work. After a reboot the usb ports working. I solve the problem by disabling the power Option "turn on fast startup". I know problem using Windows 8.1. The Vostro 1500 still working with Windows 10 and I am happy :)

Here is how to fix USB Ports Not working In Windows 10

You can attach the USB device that is not being recognized, to any of the USB ports

Press WIN+R keys together to open the Run dialog box. Once it opens up, type in devmgmt.msc and hit enter key.

A separate window named Device Manager opens up. You need to find and expand the entry named Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Under the entry, find Unknown USB Device marked with a yellow warning sign.

Right click on it and click on the Uninstall option.

Finally, find the tab named Action at the top and choose Scan for hardware changes as shown in the screenshot given below. That’s it. Your USB device should work now.
