Non-bootable USB 2.0 hard drive hangs POST on I8600

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has seen this behavior other than me.  I have a 60GB USB 2.0 hard drive connected to my Inspiron 8600.  It is not bootable - it just contains a bunch of my photos and documents from work.  It works fine in XP, but when I boot the machine with the drive attached, the POST hangs - with the status bar at about 80% of full.  If I disconnect the drive and reboot, the machine boots fine.  In the BIOS settings, the usb drive boot option is last on the list, so I wouldn't expect it to look at the external drive before it looks at my internal drive.

Is this a problem with the drive, or the 8600?

Oh, one more thing - I'm running BIOS version A01.

I have just recieved my inspiron 8600 and it has only one issue that I noted and this is that my external USB 2.0 hard drive does not get detected properly and work.  It has been recognized without drivers on all other systems that I have used that have USB 2.0 without problem.  The behavior has been really flakey.  Occasionally, it will detect the device several MINUTES after the device is left plugged into the port after an error message has been generated.  I have tried to load and and unload the device several times to no avail.  I have also deleted all references to the hard drive in the registry before trying to reinstall it and it still does not work.  Major problem for me as this is how I transport all files to various computers I use at work and home.  Any thoughts would of course be appreciated

If your HDD is bus-powered, then possibly you have the same issues as I do. The i8500 USB port does not seem to generate enough power to run some external USB devices. The i8600 is the i8500 with newer chipset motherboard, newer CPU and newer graphics card..everything else is the same. I found that only the top USB port is version 2. The bottom one is version 1.1 USB.

When I plug the HDD into the bottom port, it gives an error similar to "plugging a high speed device into a low speed hub". I'm running WinXP with SP1 and all updates to date.

When I plug the HDD into the top port, there is no problems but performance is very sluggish. Until I plugged in an external powered USB2 hub into the top i8500 USB port and connected the HDD to the hub, then only the HDD blazed away.

Woah!  I had no idea that the Inspiron 8600 only had one USB 2.0 port because the other port was USB 1.1.

Are you stating that both USB ports on the 8600 are not 2.0?

I think that they are both 2.0 USB - please tell me I'm right...

Check your Device manager,  you can find out that there is only one USB 2.0 enhance controller,  so don't expect they would give you two USB 2.0 ports.

try disabling USB emulation (it would be on Page 4 of the Dell BIOS)

Hi, i have the same Problem with Bios A07. The external Hard Drive works fine under Windows XP but the Computer freezes on POST if the Drive is attached and power on.

(the external enclosure uses a chip from genesislogic (GL811USB) )

Hope, there is someone who can help!

I tried to disable USB Emulation --> no change
