You can't hear the synth's sounds through the computer's speakers because on all Dell laptops monitoring of the input jack is turned off by default. I'm not sure of the answer to the other parts of your question.

... midi cables connected from the synth to the computer.

Do you have an external MIDI interface that you are using to connect the synth to the computer? In that configuration are you trying to use the synth as a controller to trigger the Windows software synth?

Are you running vista or xp? Many software and hardware items are not as yet compatible with vista. PLease see my post about this. I have just purchased a Korg M3 and will be having similar problems I'm sure. Let me know how it works out for you. I'll be waiting anxiously

 Thanks,

hi there cheers for the help guys,

i've been informed that i should set my sound card to asio.

But apparently there is no support for asio on vista, in sum cases.

I'm running vista n trying to run the synth thru the audio interface Digi design M box, then into "protools"

- Recording program.

I'm also trying to get it to work in "FL studio"- music production program.

How do i turn on the input jack then, do u know?

This problem can't really be solved if i can't get teh asio driver to work can it?

if any one else can help, please feel free to reply.

Thanx...

Because you are using an external audio interface, the computer's internal audio system is not a part of your setup anymore. The M Box is taking the place of the Sigmatel audio chip. If you need an asio driver then the place you need it is in the M Box if it supports it. If you have it set as your default recording/playback device then it is now the "sound card". You should be able to monitor it by using headphones or powered speakers connected to it.

I still don't fully understand what you are doing. If you are going into the audio input of the M Box ("trying to run the synth thru the audio interface") then I assume you are trying to record the synth's own sounds, not using a software synth. But earlier you mentioned that you are also using MIDI cables connected to the computer.

Hey Jim,

Thanx for responding to me again, i appreciate it.

Yeah i understand what u mean jim bout the m box now being the sound card. the question lies in the fact that the m box doesnt really have asio drivers i don't think. so i cant really get the synth to go into my fl studio program.

However, yeah i am trying to record audio thru audio cables from the synth to the m box.

i do also have midi cables connected from the m box to the synth as well.

I think i can record str8 synth audio into pro tools via the m box, but the big problem is the waiting for these asio drivers to be made so i can use my synth to it's full potential, in FL Studio.

Vista isn't that great is it?

If i had the choice again, i should of stayed with xp if i had of known the complications in which i was going to be facing.

If i plug my speakers into the mbox, how do i now get everyday computer windows sounds etc to be routed to be heard thru the speakers i have no plugged into the m box?

Because they are still coming out of the computer's built in speakers.

Cheers Mark..

Mark,

When I wrote "If you need an asio driver then the place you need it is in the M Box...", I didn't phrase that exactly right, so I'm glad you got my meaning anyway.

I don't have either Vista or an M vBox so I can't be too specific about your rig, but you have to set the M Box to be the default audio device. In Vista I think it's something like this:

Control Panel / Hardware and Sound/ Sound (if you're using "Classic View" there's a direct link to "Sound" in the Control Panel), then click on the Playback tab.

The M Box might show up under its own name or maybe just as "usb device" or something similar. Once you have selected it then the internal audio system will be deselected and you should no longer hear sound from its speakers. You should also configure the recording and midi devices you want to use. Again, I'm vague on exactly what options show up in Vista.

Hey Jim,

yeah i tried to access the sound menus to set the mbox as the default audio device.

i looked in device manager, n found the sound menu n the digdesign drivers x2 one for midi n one for audio.

but i found no way to set them as a default.

i also tried looking in control panel the way u mentioned but also had no luck.

any idea's on how to find this out?

unlucky for me, my dell customer support 12 months has now ended, so i can't ask them fo any help on this matter.

Mark...

Sorry but I've never had Vista and don't know the exact options that it shows you, other than the path I quoted. It's simple in XP, because there are individual dropdown boxes for default playback device, recording device and midi device. Each box has a list of every device (driver) of that type that is on the computer and all you have to do is select one and that effectively deselects or disables all the others. Those boxes are in the 'Sound and audio device properties' section of the Control Panel. Apparently Vista lacks the exact equivalent, but I don't think Device Manager is the place to set defaults.

Isn't there some kind of M Box forum where you can talk to others who have hooked it up to a Dell laptop with Vista?

There are others on this board who have Vista with an external audio device (not M Box) attached, for example dgkpcon who has a Creative Audigy express slot audio card. He would know where he goes in Vista to select between the internal and external audio systems.
