My laptop is making beeping noise

When I start my Inspiron N5040, it makes audible 3 beeps for 3 times then it goes away but I can hear

faint 5 beeping noises while computer is running at a regular interval.  It beeps for 5 times then pauses for a few seconds then it continues on and on.

Hi ELIJAH3,

3 beeps codes is a system board failure and 5 beeps is a CMOS battery failure.

Ensure you backup all imp data on the system first.

Update the BIOS if possible - http://dell.to/2g6cqpK- restart the system and check.

Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.

If the 5 beeps issue persists, then download the service manual from the above link - remove and reseat the CMOS battery and check. Or replace the CMOS battery and check.

If the issue is unresolved, then I would suspect a motherboard failure.

You could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

You could also order the parts online here - http://bit.ly/2gLyEP1

My personal suggestion is for you to invest your money on a new machine than to repair this system. However, that is your discretion.

Beeping noise could be of anything. I would suggest you to take backup of your drive first before making any experiment. Go for SMART test and scan errors. Check whether it is overheating or not.

If it is repeating short beep then check power connection.

Here is more details about the beeping noise.  It is 5 loud beeps when I start then the noise becomes lower when computer starts up.  When I pressed F12 key, it showed error code of 200'0-0147, Validation code of 15995 and had an "x" next to CD/ROM.  My CD/DVD drive hasn't worked for quite some time and I have not used it.  If that is the problem, is there anyway I can disable the CD/DVD drive?

Five beeps is either a bad CMOS (clock backup) battery or a bad clock chip.

First thing to do is replace the CR-2032 battery on the mainboard (which unfortunately does require significant disassembly;  see below).

If replacing the battery doesn't end the beeping, it's the clock chip that's gone bad -- fixing that requires a mainboard replacement.

Hi ELIJAH3,

Adding onto ejn63, the ODD needs to be replaced as well.
