Missing memory card reader

I reset my laptop back to factory settings a few days ago. I also purchased a DVD burner. When I plugged the dvd burner into my laptop, it automatically assigned the drive as the same drive as my memory card reader. Which I guess wiped out the memory  card reader drive?? It had to either be the dvd burner or something happened when I did the reset. My memory card worked fine before I did both of these, but unfortunately I did both only a day apart.

I have already tried updating the drives and doing a system restore. Neither has worked. I also assigned the dvd burner a new drive letter. I'd like to correct this so I can upload my photos from the memory card. Can anyone help?

This is my first time posting for something like this so I'm not sure what info will be needed. I have an Inspiron E1505 Actually, under system properties it shows I have an I6400 Which is correct? Windows XP

Thank you!

Have you look in Device Manager? http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windowsxp/f/opendmxp.htm

Any Caution or red x icons? If there is then that's your memory card reader. Update driver - or use the Dell Driver CD that you should have.

Did you do a "Force" Scan for new hardware? http://www.karbosguide.com/books/winxpbeginner/chapter16.htm

Did you reverse your actions, to see if the memory card reader appears?

If you can't solve it with the above methods. Then lets say its damage beyond repair.

To solve now, is to buy a USB memory card reader.

Thanks for replying! I did do all of those things. Last night I finally decided to contact dell. They did everything I already tried and in the end decided that the reset software probably caused the issue. My computer is still under warranty (which I did not know!) So they are sending me a new motherboard.

Thanks for the help!
